I have since found out that Margaret Mary's mother wasn't married.

The original census I found was them.
I have got Margaret's (senior) birth details 1887 Matinstown Limerick.
So now have her father and mother.

John Torpey and Margaret McCarthy. I need to work on their marrage now.

ERIN
Margaret Mary was born in Emlygrennan Limerick. I think I might be getting the hang of the places a bit now. Thanks for all the help if you want to offer more that would be brilliant
Regards Lesley

John Torpey amd Margaret also had Patrick b.3 March 1874 and Edmond b. 1 May 1878

Elliot Report 21 Mar 2010 18:50

thanks again Erin
Edmond wasnt with them in the 1911 census.

There was a young widow Henora Torpey 29 with two young children.
i wonder if it is likely he could have died.
I will also do a search for him on the Ellis Island site and check out emigration to England.

You are obviously brilliant at this if you have any general advice for me it would be great.
I have only been doing this for a month now. i am making great progress, mind I am certainly putting in the hours
You are a wondful help thanks

Sorry, not able to offer help. Just wanted to say that my Mother and her family were from Emly. Have also found a family marriage in Mitchelstown.
They seem to move between Counties , Cork, Limerick and Tipperary. I wonder if our families knew each other.

Regarding a child born out of wedlock. I think that she must have been a very brave lady to have kept her baby.
Hats off to her!

Thank you Theresa
Are you doing the Torpey family?
Yes I believe Margaret did have a difficult life. But had a supportive family I think.

Elliot Report 22 Mar 2010 07:24

Edmond wasnt in England in the 1911 census. I can't find his death and he didn't arrive in Ellis island between the 1901 and 1911 census's . I guess he might be in another county in Ireland.
Does anyone have a good site for emigration to Australia ?
Thanks

Erin you are wonderful.
that would be his mothers brother, Well done!

As far as the possible brother. Lets hope so. The names certainly fit.
I have his father and mother marrying in 1840 Patrick Torpey and Margaret Moloney.
But this is costing me a fortune on Limerick genealogy site. Is there a cheaper way of doing this. As every search costs me 5 euro!!!!

Thank you so much for your help
On my way to Ellis island now

Lesley Jane
There are ways and means of researching without it costing the earth but it is a case of having the correct family (supported by Authentic docs.) in the first place and then beginning the long slow process gathering info.
Most families named their children according to strict naming patterns...(and not always the name you know are searching for).
Families tended to marry within their own community...that community may cover other Counties eg.Limerick /Kerry /Cork...
The above also applies to searching for the Church Records.
eg; The Civil Parish of Emlygrennan is in the RC Parish of Ballinvana
The Civil Parish of Atheneasy (Covers Mitchelstown) is in the RC of
Bulgaden.

To complicate things these "Boundries" were changed to the above late 19th century so you may need to be looking at a different RC Parish the further back you go.

Lesley Jane....

The "Ancient" Parish of St Mary's is in the City of Limerick....
Did the info.not give you anything else.??

As an aside there were Malony's also living in Emlygrennan...1901..

Elliot

Elliot Report 22 Mar 2010 16:28

thank you Vincent.

i am finding this parish thingy so difficult.

But I am willing to learn. i don't just want to just find people i want to learn about their life styles and Irish history in general (well in the time span I am finding them) I have never been to ireland but am planning to treat myself for my 50 next year. I want to know a lot by the time i go.

Erin can you suggest a site i might be able to look up the parishes. To give me a better understanding.
Sorry i am being very demanding of you.
I shall find an appropriate board and ask on there as well.

Thanks for your help again

Elliot

Elliot Report 22 Mar 2010 16:36

No Erin it didn't. I was not happy at all !!!

The only info i got from it that i didnt know already was the date.

Well now i know that St.Mary's is in Limerick City which is something.

They do seen to marry people who live close by.
the other names in my tree are Duhig and Fitzgerald and going through general records (mostly Kerry) they seem to be marrying each other left right and centre)

I am sure all the Torpeys in Emlygrennan are all related in one way or another and there for all mine!!

Thank you for your continued help
