I was on there a few hours ago, too funny!! I have had the standard membership here for several years, but thought I was doing something wrong ( surprise I was!! ) Decided i may as well pay for the gold as it says on the membership unlimited access for viewing records, and I could have sworn I had found most of my mom's family history in scotland by buying credits way back when. I also have ancestry membership(had world membership for a couple months but I think I am useless as a researcher. I will blame it on the one thing I am certain of, my inherited bad memory!

FannyByGaslight Report 12 Mar 2010 23:29

Because its not on here.
Its here
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/

Pay per view ,or on subs.

Or here.

http://www.1911census.co.uk/

Pay per view only.

GR do not hold records themselves, they direct you to other sites.
You would have been better off spending your money on Ancestry or Find my past and only paying the standard membership on here to be able to use the message boards...

good point, lol, he was definitely Alfred William, not walter and apparently mum has the marriage cert here in her suite in our house...but...buried in old things of her mums.. She can't come back to here(Va) due to health issues for a little bit, currently in Canada. I upgraded to gold, thinking that might help, but not really...haha, anyone know why i can't view the 1911 census?

Bette-ann,

There was only one Charlotte Dorothy Dowell so she was easy to find. There are lots of Alfred Stantons.

FannyByGaslight Report 12 Mar 2010 21:21

This is the marriage you need to send for.

Name: Alfred W Stanton
Spouse Surname: Dowell
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1929
Registration district: Wandsworth
Registration county (inferred): Surrey
Volume Number: 1d
Page Number: 744
Find Spouse: Charlotte D Dowell

Yes Charlotte has been found on 1911,she was not difficult to pin point.

But without Alfreds fathers name there are choices for which one is "your"Alfred on 1911.
So his marriage cert to Charlotte will give you the info you need to be certain you have the correct one in 1911....

Bette-ann

Bette-ann Report 12 Mar 2010 21:03

Confused, Alfred would have been 7 in the 1911 census, so would I be looking for my inlaws marriage cert or Alfred's parents? I see charlotte is listed with her parents and siblings in the 1911 census, so would there not be the same information on Alfred?

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 12 Mar 2010 20:20

The only real way to get anywhere is to invest £7 at the GRO on his marriage cert as I said before.
Certs go up to £9.25p on 6th April from GRO
Anything else is guess work.

Hi everyone, Just thought I would let you all know that I spoke with my mum in law this afternoon and she is just out of hospital, thankfully doing okay now, but we had a bit of scare. she just loved hearing all this information and thanks all of your for your contributions. she added a bit from the stories told to her as a child that apparently her father( alfred) was driving for St Johns ambulance and it was bombed and he wasn't found until weeks later on a roof of a building.. Now I imagine this is a story that has been exaggerated a tad over the years, and given that he died at Edsall Road,( hospital) I assume he was probably found hours, not days or even weeks, lol but I'm hoping there is some records somewhere to help identify who his family was. Thinking this other Alfred Walter Stanton who also died in 1940 may have been a cousin?? Any thoughts?
thanks again everyone!

FannyByGaslight Report 12 Mar 2010 16:21

His resting place should be here,as per details from the War graves site as posted earlier by Rose.

Cemetery Details

Cemetery: HOLBORN, METROPOLITAN BOROUGH
Country: Civilian War Dead
Locality: London
No. of Identified Casualties: 269

To identify Alfred on 1911 census you really need to send for his marriage cert for his fathers name and occupation.
There are a couple of Alfred Stantons that could be him, favourite being the one in Wandsworth reg district,BUT it would simply be guessing I fear..

What do you think Rose?

I am putting this here for Bette-Ann from her other thread and then hopefully just this thread can be used to help find things on this family for her.

Thanks to everyone for your understanding about my lack of board etiquette. Sorry again for causing grief!
Still hoping to find where my mother in law's father's final resting place would be. Did some research on Edsall road and discovered that to be a war hospital. Would like to also know of any family related to Alfred Stanton, parents, siblings etc. She knows so little about him as she was just a wee thing when he died. So far I have learned he died as a war civilian at Edsall road, on august 8th 1940. His birth date was 1903, June I believe.
Thanks again,
Bette-ann

The fault is actually with G.R.... but very frustrating for members trying to find info for you.

When you post on the "Surname" board, your requsest also appears on the "Trying to Find" board...... there fore you have 2 requests about the same couple.

Obviously the marriage applies to both, then we extend our searches from there.
Hopefully finding their births, parents etc, etc..

So you end up with 2 threads with the same info.
Usually found by different people because they do not know of the second thread.
Then people get annoyed at wasting time finding info which is already been found.

Thank you rose, i am busy filling in my empty tree spots...question ? why are some posts deleted? Have I made an error by posting about Alfred and Charlotte on both Stanton and Dowell surname searches? I am very new to this so I would like to know if i am going against board etiquette.

Wow, im really surprised. We had no idea that her dad was that old when he died. Is there any information about where he might be buried? And also if we could get a names of parents of Charlotte or Alfred. Thank you Rose for replying and so fast! :)
