Thank You so much for your help. No one here is intersted in family history and I feel a bit fed up sometimes trying to do it on my lonesome!

Your right about the Riley connection and thanks to your encouragment Ive found them on the 71 census 'Biley' of all mistrancscriptions!

When Susan died her sister Mary Riley took in James Flanagan

The grave info Dea I had found, but its nice to have it confirmed by someone else...thanks hun

Still cant find a Susan that fits for the 1871!

Hi Ginny,

I wouldn't rule out that "Julia" on the 1871 is really " Susan" as both the persons on 1871 census were stated as born Cavin/Cavan Ireland.

The other John & Julia (1911 census) ( married 1875)are an entirely different couple as their ages are quite a bit younger and born in different location.. .

Good grief....I think you may be right about the two 'Julia's'......progress, which is more than I’ve made in the last year or so

I thought it was odd that the children the father etc match and I can’t find a Susan on the 71 census

Next problem..........I rang work today and asked them to look at Catherine's marriage cert (John and Susan's daughter) She married in 1883 to Patrick Hanaghan and her dad (The pain in question - John Flanagan) is not listed as deceased and is a general labourer

The John with Julia on the 71 census is a salesman?

Oh dear, I'm beginning to feel very guilty about dragging you into this

Thanks for helping, I feel better that someone else has an angle on this debacle and there has been progress today.......yipee

What if you were to purchase Edwards birth certificate,................

Births Sep 1870
FLANNAGHAN Edward John Sheffield 9c 345

Wonder what name the mother would have, and also what the address was. Could it be the same as the 1871 census?

Gee

Gee Report 15 Mar 2010 19:10

I think it is the same address. This info is from a relative....I need to email him again as he has the cert......

Thanks hun, you are reigniting my brain!

Ginny, do you have Ancestry?

On the Public Members trees is one for your family and they are using the 1871 " Julia "Census for this family . They also have John Flanagan as death in 1908 Sheffield They also have some photos although not of John or Susan/Julia

According to this tree, Edward married Mary Hall 1876-1949 and I believe that a couple of the photos are of their children.

Gee

Gee Report 15 Mar 2010 19:38

One of my cousins has a tree on Ancestry but he knows no more than me

Will take a looky now.......thanks hun

died 1891 Yorkshire
married 1861 Cavan Ireland
spouse John Flanagan

Interestingly, when Susan was on her own in 1881 with the children, the John Flanagan b1836 married to Sarah was away from his wife visiting elsewhere.

On the actual census it says John is a 'boarder' but the transcription says brother to the head? If this is correct then Catherine Daley is Johns sister

Im going to see if I can find John on 91 census with this family!

Dea Report 16 Mar 2010 20:21

Wasn't Catherine 8 on 1871? - She should be 18 'ish on here not 10 ??

I don't think this is fitting together.

Gee Report 16 Mar 2010 20:33

Thanks Dea.......a good point re Catherine

I just thought the enumerator had wrote it down wrong as I cant see another Catherine in the 1881

She Married in 1883 so would still have had her maiden name

I think I do have this and this is the one I think most likely to be him....general labourer

It's at work, but I'm sure I have that one

Thanks for your opinion, you can make what you want of the info when it's your family!!

Good to get an objective view
