Seeing how long ago it was that you started this thread, it was one of the first I ever helped on.

If you want a copy of the cert click on my name and send me your email address and I will forward it to you

Thank you for redirecting the last post to me Janey.
My grandmother, Edith Cane's birth was not registered. I did obtain a copy of her entry for her baptism from the Surrey History Centre,Woking. She was baptized on, 23 March 1887, the same day as her older sister. Thank you for all your help.

May I ask if anyone has advanced Ancestry and could possibly look up the marriage certificate of Edith's Grandmother's marriage.

Her name was Ellen Callaghan. She married Thomas Levett bmd Dec 1862 Lambeth 1d 479. Can you see her father's name and any witnesses names. Thank you.

Hi Judith -- if you do want to contact Sheila, it would probably be wise to send her a private message (click on her name) -- if she has the same email address as when she registered, she'll get a notification by email of your message. Otherwise, she may not be coming back here to read the thread (it's been 3 months) and she could miss your post!

Amy was widowed around age 29 she married Thomas after his first wife died and they had 9 children together,so Amy had 14 Children Amazing
I am so pleased I have more information now
If anyone know any more about the Cane family from wimbledon I would be very interested

Hi Janey, Jax, Sandra,
I sent off for the birth cert for a Gertrude Mary Cane (just in case it was Edith Cane's!!) but, unfortunately it is not the correct one. It took ages to come.

Looked on trees and found someone with Edith Cane's name in it. Sent message and got a reply. Her gr grandmother was elder sister to Edith Cane.I have checked all her sisters etc and they were on freebmd except Edith's.

Looked on Family Search and found a Baptism In Wimbledon for Edith Cane 23.3.1887. Bath No. 1030629. The parents are shown as Ellen and Charles Cane. I know that is not the mother's name but it is her grandmother's I think. If this was my granny it would probably have been at All Saints Church, All Saints Road, Wimbledon. Can anyone check this for me please. Typing this is becoming difficult, I must be doing something wrong. Thank you in advance. sheila

Aha. ;) I'd tried guessing at what the typo might have been but not succeeded.

That sounds like a reasonable guess, the Gertrude cert - a birth in mid-March would very likely have been registered in the next quarter. Keep us posted!!

Sorry Janey, I am tired again, 16 March, 1968, aged 81. My sister thinks Edith was born on St George's Day, which is 23 April. Don't know what that has to do with anything. I am going to order the birth cert for a Gertrude Mary Cane, June 1887 Qtr, Lambeth, 1d 513. The reason being that Edith Cane named one of her children Gertrude and another had the second name Mary. Of course neither were called by their christian names!!!

Sheila - "she died on 16 March 1986 aged 81" -- that makes her born 1905?

I thought Edith was born c1886 ...

I have the delux membership for ancestry, and London marriages and baptism are there to look at, original entries. Not sure how complete but I have found loads, not so great for the rest of the country, Lee

Hello all, thank you for continuing to investigate this for me. I didn't sleep much last night, about 4 hours. Thank you all for your help. It all looks much clearer when it is set out on here!

One question. Where are you viewing the wedding certs of Amy? and the Baptism?

Regarding Edith Richardson (nee Cane), I have just checked on a memorial card and she died on 16 March 1986 aged 81 years. I am going to re-check on BMD, from recollection there is a Gertrude E. Will do this later as my brain is awash with all this info.

Thanks all once again.

Hi Dea
I had another look and now it looks like her dead husbands name charles j cane perhaps.. although both marriage certs give his occupation as compositor.
This doesnt help finding Ediths birth record though, but makes you wonder about what they put on certificates back then and was never checked to see if it was correct.

Hi jax,

Re the father's name on Amy's wedding cert.

I have had a look and still am not sure what it is but what I DO know is that there is no 'y' or 'g' in the name.

If you look carefully, you will see that the word deceased has been abbreviated underneath to dec. d and the 'd' which is written higher than the others has attached itself to the name above, making that letter look like y or g ! - Compare it to the other deceased father above!

The name then is still not clear but is more like Hare, Howe, Hone ??

Perhaps you might be able to see it if you take another look?

No the witnesses are not family names, They are Elizabeth Wert or Ivert and Harry Shaw. Maybe Elizabeth was a married sister, I have now lost the plot and am going to bed. Thanks once again Janey.
