Thanks for the information that you have sent me i have contacted a 3x cousin who is in his 90's, he and his parents lived with Wm. Cooper b1858 for a number of years, he was unaware that richard was previously married & had a son James, we are going to check to see if he came to australia with his half siblings.

Aileen
Can I ask please where you found the details of the Irish marriage? Just think it might help with some of my own Irish lot.

Aileen

This is the marriage cert information

This gives his father's name as James and occupation as weaver.....Helen(ms Watson)Meldrum death cert gives her as widow of a weaver.....................but .........there were an awful lot of weavers in Dunfermline.
I'm sure we have it correct though

Have a look here for Dunfermline weavers - Richard's not on it but perhaps you may find something useful.

That was a good find! Did the death certificate confirm her husband's name? Part of the difficulty here, of course is that not all the 1841 census for Fife survived as some of it met a watery grave!

Thanks for checking that Aileen - at least he can be eliminated now.

Aileen Report 27 Mar 2010 22:26

I found a death for Helen ( ms Watson) Meldrum died 1861 aged 81.....signed by William Meldrum (son).......parents John and Elzabeth think the ms is Wright

Aileen

Aileen Report 27 Mar 2010 22:03

I took a look at the marriage cert for James Meldrum and Catherine (Donaldson)......not the James Meldrum son of Richard......this ones parents were William and Catherine ms McGregor.

rootgatherer Report 27 Mar 2010 16:14

I think there is a good chance that this is Richard's son James, married with a family. A check on Scotlandspeople for the marriage would confirm this.

Oooh I just noticed the address for the 1851 census Golfdrum Street.....my aunty lives there

Aileen

Aileen Report 27 Mar 2010 14:03

As the 1851 census states James Meldrum is Richards son it looks as if he was married before so marriage suggested by Ann of Green Gables may well be his.

No need to apologise Trudi.

You can look on that site that I have given you the link to and see if you can find any more births in Ireland for the siblings of Samuel. When you find the details of year, quarter, volume and page number use those to oder the certificate ( I printed them off and attached them to the order form). The order forms and instructions are available from the GROIRE web site. They cannot take credit card payments but if you get some Euros and send them "signed for" mail they will accept that.

When you get the marriage certificate, post the details and we'll see if we can find Richard on the 1841 or 1851 census. You could also look for deaths for him and his wife in Ireland as it looks as if Helen and Samuel are maybe orphans and boarded out. It may be that Richard and his wife died and the children were sent back to his family in his native Fife.

Let us know how you get on and Good Luck.

EDIT

Here's the link for the order forms

Thank you, I will get birth certificate my grandfather told me a number of years ago that his grandfather came from fifeshire, scotland. The three children came to australia sometime before 1885, I'm not sure if there were more children born to the marriage. Sorry

Richard and Mary married in Ireland in 1853.

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#surname=Meldrum;marriage

So how do you know Richard was born in Fife please?

You need the details from that marriage i.e. Richards occupation and his father's name and occupation and it may be possible to find them on the 1851 or 1841 census - if you think that he may have been in Scotland then.
