Have a look here for Dunfermline weavers - Richard's not on it but perhaps you may find something useful.

That was a good find! Did the death certificate confirm her husband's name? Part of the difficulty here, of course is that not all the 1841 census for Fife survived as some of it met a watery grave!

I think there is a good chance that this is Richard's son James, married with a family. A check on Scotlandspeople for the marriage would confirm this.

As the 1851 census states James Meldrum is Richards son it looks as if he was married before so marriage suggested by Ann of Green Gables may well be his.

No need to apologise Trudi.
You can look on that site that I have given you the link to and see if you can find any more births in Ireland for the siblings of Samuel. When you find the details of year, quarter, volume and page number use those to oder the certificate ( I printed them off and attached them to the order form). The order forms and instructions are available from the GROIRE web site. They cannot take credit card payments but if you get some Euros and send them "signed for" mail they will accept that.
When you get the marriage certificate, post the details and we'll see if we can find Richard on the 1841 or 1851 census. You could also look for deaths for him and his wife in Ireland as it looks as if Helen and Samuel are maybe orphans and boarded out. It may be that Richard and his wife died and the children were sent back to his family in his native Fife.
Let us know how you get on and Good Luck.
EDIT
Here's the link for the order forms

Richard and Mary married in Ireland in 1853.
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#surname=Meldrum;marriage Year=1853;marriagePlace=Ireland;searchType=standard;p=recordResults;marriage PlaceId=1927084;givenName=Richard
So how do you know Richard was born in Fife please?
You need the details from that marriage i.e. Richards occupation and his father's name and occupation and it may be possible to find them on the 1851 or 1841 census - if you think that he may have been in Scotland then.
