Unfortunately, the truth was not always told, and William may have said he was a widower in 1907 (well, he lied about his age on marriage, by 5 years by the looks of it) and the Rachel who died in 1910 was his wife and still alive in 1907.

It's all supposition though, without documentary evidence. Which means the marriage cert of William and Rachel Fish, possibly the death cert of Rachel Entwistle too if the marriage cert indicates the right William. Both marriage and death are on Lancs bmd (Rachel died in Darwen), and at Blackburn Register Office, so you could perhaps save yourself the cost of one of those certificates by printing off the forms and sending them to Blackburn with a covering letter that you really don't want both certificates, but will happily pay for the marriage if William's father is William, a slater, and would they be able to tell you if the Rachel who died in 1910 would appear to be the wife of William, a painter. They might insist you pay for both certificates to get this information, but it's worth a try.

This could be the family in 1881:

1881 England Census

Relation: Son
Father's Name: William
Mother's Name: Ann
Gender: Male
Where born: Darwen, Lancashire, England

Civil parish: Over Darwen
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Street Address: 33 Sarah St
Education:

Employment status: View image
Occupation: Paper Works (Oddman)

Registration district: Blackburn
Sub-registration district: Darwen
ED, institution, or vessel: 18
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
William Entwistle 49 Flagger and Slater b Darwen
Ann Entwistle 48
John Entwistle 27

Edward Entwistle 18
William Entwistle 16 Paper works oddman
Robert Shaw Entwistle 14
Mary A. Entwistle 13
Peter Entwistle 9
Betty Entwistle 6

The William who married Rachel Fish could be possible - the daughter Florence Ethel Entwistle is living with her uncle Squire Fish in 1911, indicating that her mother at least may be dead.

I don't envy you on this - Entwistle is a strong Lancashire name and Fish - well, don't ask, there are hoardes of them in my own family - all from Darwen and nearby.

EDIT - beat Ann by a whole 2 minutes!

wiliam was born in darwen. on his marriage cert to helena (which i have ) it states his age as 37 but i dont think that is exact. his father was william (deceased) master slater. william was living at 1 manchester rd chapel en le frith at the time of the marriage in 1907. his occupation was a painter.

Hi Alison

have you found William & Helena in 1911 which would give William's birthplace.

Does the marriage certificate give his age and father's name & occupation?
and Helena Edith's age?

There are a few William Entwistle marriages around the right time so the one to Rachel may not be the right one.

i am pretty sure this is the william i am looking for. but now another question is, where is the death of rachel, as wiliam married helena (edith) in 1907 & it states he was a widow.
i have found a rachel entwistles death in 1910 but thats too late

lancashireAnn Report 10 May 2010 22:25

in light of previous baptism this is a curious co-incidence

Madmeg Report 29 Mar 2010 19:48

Yes, Alison, there is no point in taking guesses with this. If your ancestors are the couple William and Helena you can't proceed safely without that certificate.

i traced a william entwistle 1867 back to darwen where he was born & found that he was married to mary jane evans. i have since come across another one born in darwen also married & this time to a rachel & they have 1 daughter florence e entwistle 1888. this william is a painter which my william was. my william married helena vernon but not until 1907 a year after arnold (helenas son) was born. he was also a painter. i think i shall have to send away for william & helena`s marr cert & hopefully find some answers in there.

Madmeg Report 28 Mar 2010 03:05

Good advice SnowyJen. That cert will also show if he was previously married (we hope).

Just had a thought, don't quiz me, leave me till Monday, might be able to solve this by devious means.

SnowyJen

SnowyJen Report 27 Mar 2010 23:16

Hi Alison
If you're sure he married Helena vernon then you need to get the marriage certificate to confirm the fathers name
the marriage has already been posted by Madmeg

SnowyJen, I think that family is the one I've found in 1911, children Annie, Alice, Harold and Fred.

There is a William Henry Entwistle born Haslingden still living with his Mary Jane in 1911, married for 21 years. That could be the marriage that Brummiejan has posted.

And several other William Entwistles in the area of around the same age.

Alison, how do you know your William married Mary Jane Evans? Or how do you know he was married twice?

well i`m pretty sure that wiliam was married to mary jane evans & i have looked to see if she had perhaps died. not found evidence of this yet? so then thought maybe they divorced. William went on to marry helena edith vernon in 1907.
