Aveyronnaise Report 6 Apr 2010 13:37

Laura Annie Oddy (b 1886 Staincliffe, Dewsbury, Yorkshire) was still in Pudsey, Yorkshire at the time of the 1901 census, but married in Illinois in 1910. Could someone with access to passenger lists possibly look her up and let me know when and where she left and - if possible - whether she was travelling alone? I have also "lost" her brother Walter Harry Oddy (b 1897 Holborn, London) so am interested to know if he also went to the States. I know that their brother Newham (b 1888, also in Staincliffe) also emigrated.

Many thanks to anyone who is able to help!

Thanks for that, Choccy. Could I be cheeky and ask if you could check on the aforementioned Walter Harry Oddy and Newham Oddy to see when they went?

Thanks again!!

Hello Maureen! Haven't bumped into you on here for a while - not since you discovered my criminal ancestors for me!

Thanks for that info on Walter ... so I now nearly have this little family sorted.

Hi Chris!
Just one thing-I think I see Walter's WW1 draft registration, but he's put his name down as Walter Foster Oddy-born England Nov.24,1897. Are there 2 Walters?

Hmmm - just tried putting Walter Foster Oddy into Ancestry search and got only one (locked) match - for the record you mention. Could it be a mistranscription? I can't think of any reason why "my" Walter would have Foster as a middle name, and all other records have shown him as Harry.

Walter Foster Oddy is a farm hand and has a nearest relative, Edna Marie Oddy, so it looks to be the same one on the census.
Definitely reads Foster as well! He was 20 years old.

Is it just me or is anyone else having problems with getting the 1920 census to work?

And Newham has the middle name of Edwards on his WW1 form-and he's in Texas of all places!

Choccy - that 1910 census is brilliant, because she was boarding with her future in-laws! Later that year she married their son Herbert Lorenzo Jackson. Now I find myself wondering whether she met and married him because she was their lodger, or whether she was lodging with them because she was about to marry him? We may never know!

Aveyronnaise

Aveyronnaise Report 6 Apr 2010 14:22

I am also interested that Newham said (when he immigrated into the US) that he was going to stay with his brother Edward - he didn't HAVE a brother Edward!

I suppose this was something to do with some kind of "sponsorship" - maybe you had to have a definite destination in order to prevent people just becoming hobos? Though, looking at Newham's path across the States, that is exactly what he DID do!

I'm having problems, too, with the 1920 census, Maureen. I was trying to double-check something I found yesterday but it's not there today. Thought I was having another "senior moment". Glad to hear someone else is having a problem.

On the Ellis island site, Laura lists as her nearest relative or friend from country she came from as G.R. Tomlinson, Somerset Rd., Pudsey. She's going to join Newham Oddy, Alexander?, Moreton?, Illinois.
