I have found an overseas army birth record of Maria T. Stangroom (my gt gt grandmother) born 1850 in Mauritius, also listed is her brother Henry Stangroom born Mauritius 1848 - trying to find their parents to continue my research.

Says 5th regiment on the army birth record listings - thats all I have.

Maria (Mary) T. came to England later (when?) and was married 1870 in Plymouth to John Gay.

have you order the birth certificates and marriage certificates?

Vicci

Vicci Report 11 Apr 2010 02:58

regiment could be

"Bolton's Mauritius Almanac, and Official Directory", by W. Draper Bolton, 1851, says the 5th Regiment of Foot (Northumberland Fusiliers), the 12th (East Suffolk) Regiment of Foot, the Royal Artillery and the Royal Sappers and Miners were there in 1851. "

I have ordered Maria T. and John Gays marr. cert.

Can order a birth cert through the same channels even though it was a military birth?

Vicci

Vicci Report 11 Apr 2010 03:46

yes you should be able to get through GRO

Sue

Sue Report 12 Apr 2010 03:08

Victoria - I went to order birth cert. for:

Maria T. Stangroom, b.1850 Mauritius

The only information on the Army birth record listing is theabove (name/year/country)

and

5th Regiment Vol 923 Page 8

So because it doesn't have the QTR etc I can't order it through the GRO? Any suggestions?

hi you order from gro online

you need to select OVERSEAS births

For overseas events which were registered with the British authorities
7. Birth Certificate (Overseas events)

Maria Theresa Stangroom b/c born 1st January 1850 in Port St Louis, Mauritius, baptized 11th January, 1850.

Her parents listed on the b/c were William and Maria Stangroom.

Father: 5th Regiment of the Fusiliers/Private

Marriage certificate for Maria T. Stangroom (to John Gay) 14th May 1870 in Plymouth.
Father William Stangroom listed as deceased.
Mother listed as a Mary Hannah Stangroom.

So now I need HELP!!

I have everything from Maria Theresa Stangroom (b.1850) onward, birth, marriage, children etc.

But cannot find anything about her parents either a Maria Hannah or Mary Hannah and William Stangroom.

As both of Mary (Maria) Hannah and Williams children were born on the island of Mauritius (Mary Theresa 1950 and Henry 1848) I entertained the idea that William (who was stationed there) met Mary (Maria) Hannah on the island. Interestingly there are several Maria Hannahs born on Mauritius and listed in the slave reports...

I'm at a loss and want to find out where they came from and what happened to them...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Sue

5th of Foot, The Northumberland Fusiliers set sail for Mauritius in 1847 and arrived in 1848. Is it possible he was married before sailing as Henry came along in 1848?

In 1857 the Fusiliers went on to India and were involved in the relief of Lucknow.

Sue did you actually get the birth cert which should give her mother's maiden name?

Ozi

Sue

Sue Report 23 Aug 2010 17:14

Maria T. Stangrooms b/c does not list the maiden name of her mother - its blank where it says surname.

Obviously Maria went back to England because she got married in 1870 in Plymouth and her mother was a witness on the marriage certificate (is says father deceased).

I cannot find anything on Henry, William or Mary (Maria) Hannah.

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 23 Aug 2010 23:37

So you haven't found her mother on 1871 census or her death?

Or living anywhere near Plymouth, obviously.

Ozi

More: Have you found Maria's second marriage, and her death?

There's a William Stangroom marriage in 1840, with a Maria in the list of brides:

Marriages Dec 1840
BOWES Philip Clerkenwell 3 37
COLE Caroline Clerkenwell 3 37
FRANKHAM Selina Clerkenwell 3 37
HOLLAND Frederick Clerkenwell 3 37
JONES William Hunt Clerkenwell 3 37
Philpot Mary Clerkenwell 3 37
Stangroom William Clerkenwell 3 37
TUCKER Maria Clerkenwell 3 37

I don't spot him in 1841, but who knows how that surname might have been mistranscribed.

In 1841 there's a Maria aged abt 30 (or more, with rounding) in St John Hackney with two children, Charlotte 10 and Mark 9; she is of independent means and was born in Foreign Parts, the children born in England but not in county. ?

I don't think the 1841 family is Sue's, Janey.

Ah, so that's where those 1841 Stangrooms went -- the US. No wonder I couldn't find further trace of them. ;)

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 24 Aug 2010 00:56

In 1881, Maria Jr is Mary:

Name: Mary T. Gay
Age: 31
Estimated birth year: abt 1850
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name: John
Where born: British Subject, Mauritius

Civil parish: Paddington

I wonder about this one in 1861:

Name: Mary Stangroom
Age: 10
Estimated birth year: abt 1851
Relation: Scholar
Where born: Indiana

Civil parish: Chelsea St Luke
County/Island: Middlesex

Address is St Ann's Home, which seems to be alongside St Wilfred's Convent (the superintendent of the home is a religious).

Obviously it doesn't say Indiana, it says India. A disproportionate number of the girls are born in Ireland, which would be consistent with being family of British soldiers.

If you were to add a correction, for both Maria and India (convenient shorthand for Mauritius, I think -- or -- India was where she had been sent home to school from, per Ozi's info about where the regiment was), anyone else searching would find her, and find you.

Wow. Okay, it'll take me a while to wrap my head around all that.

I do know all about Maria T. Stangroom, going on to marry George Scott and using the name Teresa....Most everything that there is to know, I already have.

Its just the parents.

I'll sift through all this - Thanks Sue
