I think there was probably some age-rounding going on in both years. Rounded down to 25 in 1841, when she was maybe 27 or 28, nice round 40 in 1851. I wouldn't worry a huge amount about that.

The "shoe maker" for her husband is very consistent in both censuses, too.

For the name, yes, I understand Janet / Jennet / Jean / Jane - you can't count on consistency with them, in Scotland!

Thank you Yes. Richardson and Mc/MacDowall were the names.

Richardson familyI am a little confused with the Janet Richardson and The Jean Richardson and the difference in the age.. I am not sure but I think in Scotland If you were Jean you could also be addressed as Janet and vice a versa. But Janet and Jean age difference throws me. The father John had abviously died by 1851. The other names and ages fit ok.

Thanks alot for your help.
Cheers

So, there are 166 names on Agnew Crescent in Wigtown in 1841. I still don't know what name we're looking for!

There's no Mac/McDowall, if that's it.

Still don't know what name you were looking for on North Side of High St in 1851, either.

Won't you say??

First Thank You. The Reason I was searching for these addresses.
In 1841 my g.g.greandfather lived at Agnew Cresent, Wigtown. By 1851 his wife was a widow, pauper and had moved with her children to Northside high Street Wigtown. His Yougest child at that time was only one So he must have died between 1849 and 1851. I wanted to know if relatives had taken his family in after he died. Ialso wondered who lived at Agnew Crescent after John's family had moved.

Maybe a coincidence but his eldest son James later mariied a Catherine McDowall in 1863 (in Liverpool) She was also down as from Wigtown on census.

I have also been trying to find Catherines family .

So Thank you for all the help and info you have sent me. I really do appreciate the amount of free help that is offered on this site.

Cheers

Hi Jean - don't you have Ancestry census access?

Scottish census records at Ancestry have addresses included.

You can go to the 1851 Scotland census search page, and search for Wigtownshire, Wigtown, address: Agnes.

Unfortunately there are no results.

Searching in 1841 for Wigtownshire, Wigtown, address: northside, there are no results. For address: high, there are 1026 results.

Okay, I see one that is "High Street South". So yours might be "High Street North"? No, there are no results for that.

So I tried "high north" for address, and that gets 185 results where the address shown is "North Side of High St".

So I guess the question is, what name are you looking for?

Or, if you do have ancestry access, search the 1841 Scotland census for "North Side of High St" in Wigtown and browse the results.
