Clare Report 3 May 2010 18:04

Hello again, I hope everyone's had a nice Bank Holiday :)

I think Castle Martin is a bit too far away to mesh well with his place of birth - about 20 miles. Plus it's not in the Haverfordwest area either - but I shall keep an open mind! ...and the same for his age!!

Basically, there are no William Stephens born at that time living in the right area later. So I'm going to have a look over in the Glamorgan area again, where he lived later in life, to see if his father moved them over that way for the mining when he was young....maybe I'll get lucky with it this time! Might have missed something before..

Thanks everyone for all the help! :)

OK, one last offer before I shut down completely:

- there is a child William, son of Thomas, living in Stackpole Elidor in 1841, age 10. He is likely to be the labourer still living in Stackpole Elidor in 1851, who states that he is born in Castlemartin - however, Stackpole Elidor is in Castlemartin hundred - and might it be possible to mix up the handwritten version of Elidor and Crinow?

Name: William Stephens

Yes, I shall need to turn in soon too ...

are you going to carry on for a bit longer Sylvia?

I've been squinting at the age on the 1861 census (Farmer's servant). The supervisor's check mark is over the age, which complicates the second digit. However, the enumerator does have a very distinctive method of writing 8 (practically on its side), so that it is distinguishable from a 3. While I was doing this, I suddenly realised that what I had thought was a first digit 3 with a supervisor's mark actually looks much more like this enumerator's 2. So perhaps he is not quite so old after all?

Edit: so, as Clare suggested, since the second digit looks like a 3, he might even be as young as 23?

I did see that William in 1851, b. in Cants, and wondered

It is Cants on the image, so not a mistranscription of something else (my first thought!!).

and that William was an Ag Lab, which fits in with the 1861 (Farmers Servant)

I really don't like Welsh searches!!!

.................... OH is half Welsh! Roberts, Hughes, Morton, Jones etc etc

Clare Report 2 May 2010 23:39

I'm trying to think of anywhere the enumerator might have mistaken Crinow for..esp as William was a Welsh speaker so I assume he would have called it Crynwedd.

I'm going to have to call it a night now, I have an early start...despite the bank holiday! Thanks for all your help and I'll have another crack at finding him tomorrow evening. :)

Clare Report 2 May 2010 23:36

Marloes is right on the West Coast of Pembrokeshire. So about 20-25 miles from Narberth.

Edit: Yes, I think it would be more likely that it's different William..a bit too far out maybe.

Ivy

Ivy Report 2 May 2010 23:34

Marloes is some way off, on the west coast, and north of Milford Haven...

Ivy

Ivy Report 2 May 2010 23:31

Hmm, could be the enumerator's mistranscription. So this chap is a possible? If so, he is 21 and could have wandered away from his place of birth. Where is Marloes?

Clare

Clare Report 2 May 2010 23:27

I've seen that William before I think.

I've never heard of Cants though, and I can't think of anything that it could be short for. Google maps is giving me two options (the search was giving me results for missing cats...):
The Cants, Saundersfoot, Dyfed
Cants Cottage, Camrose Farm, Camrose, Haverfordwest, Dyfed

Saundersfoot is a bit too far away to be him. Camrose is on the other side of Haverfordwest from Narberth - but still has a Haverfordwest address so is a possibility. But I wish I could be sure of what they meant by Cants.

Clare

Clare Report 2 May 2010 23:23

Yes, I think he's probably older than I originally thought.

I can only get two marriages for William Stephens in Narberth though, one to the Frances and the 1851 marriage above.

I did think that the 1823 bit might have been his employer getting it wrong, also I figured that a 3 is very similar to an 8 so it would be easy for either to look like the other.

Ivy

Ivy Report 2 May 2010 23:21

There is this chap in 1851 who is not easily matched to 1861:

Name: William Stephens
Age: 23

Another possible marriage in 1851?

Ivy

Ivy Report 2 May 2010 23:19

So we should pick up Sylvia's comment about his age - although he had fixed on being 10 years older than Susannah for most of his married life, he is quite a bit older in 1861 - a birth year of 1823

Ivy

Ivy Report 2 May 2010 23:17

That's strange, I thought I'd just found Frances' death. I can't see them in 1861.

Edit - yes you're right that's them, I guess it's just a coincidence then.

And 1871...definately not my William then..

Thanks anyway Ivy, it's useful to know for the future :)

Ivy

Ivy Report 2 May 2010 23:13

The William and Frances couple are also seen on 1861 - William then says he is b 1820, same place (so distinct from the farm servant, unless he had scarpered and the wife put him down on the form anyway)

Ivy

Ivy Report 2 May 2010 23:11

Hi Clare, yes, having now seen that Crinow is dwarfed by Narberth and that Monkton is really a suburb of Pembroke, my comments above are not useful for this chap.

Clare

Clare Report 2 May 2010 23:04

This is the one I was thinking of. Landewi Velfry was apparently often lumped in with Crinow. But maybe a bit old?
