Hi, this is for a friend.

I am looking for her uncle - Ronald or Roland Humphries who, for some reason unknown to her was known as Roland Prince.

I have found him as Ronald P. Humphries on the 1911, stating he was born in 1908. They are living at Droxford in Hampshire.

I have traced the other siblings ie.,
Margaret Eileen b.1900
Annie Violet b.1902
Betty Iris b.1904
William Lacy b.1905
All born in Herefordshire.

I have found the parents, William and Annie on the 1901 living in Herefordshire

I cannot, however, find Roland/Ronald's birth

Could someone take a look to see what I am missing please?

Many thanks. Cx.

Thank you Flick. I didn't think about the other way of spelling the name and he is down as Ronald on the 1911 which threw me a little.......and 'tis late!

Very grateful for your time. Love, Cx.

Well, I thought it would be relatively simple to wend my weary way back through the census.....huh!

I tried to find William on the 1891....but I simply can't - not under the birthplace of Prescot anyway. I even checked through all of the entries for Prescot in 1891.....zilch.

Here is the entry for 1901

Name: William Humphries
Age: 41
Estimated birth year: abt 1860
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Annie
Gender: Male
Where born: Prescott, Lancashire, England

Civil parish: Holme Lacy
Ecclesiastical parish: Holme Lacy St Cuthbert
County/Island: Herefordshire
Country: England

Household Members: Name Age
William Humphries 41
Annie Humphries 30
Margaret E Humphries 5 months

Source Citation: Class: RG13; Piece: 2477; Folio: 47; Page: 9.

I have also checked on the igi - no success there either.

The family is on the 1911 living at Droxford in Hampshire but I don't have access to see where William states his place of birth.

So...I give up....again......such a failure !! Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks. Cx.

Thanks Choccy, he seems to be the nearest birth doesn't he?

I did wonder if he just said he was from 'Liverpool' on the 1891 but that's a lot of guesswork! Cx

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 7 May 2010 08:23

Oh FBG, I'm so sorry, I missed your 2nd contribution - overcome by a fit of coughing!

Well, I suppose he could be either of them because he was certainly a gardener. I will try and find out if my friend can offer a little more information to help us along.

You know I am really grateful don't you! Cx.

Edit.....I'm going to stick my neck out for the first one. The election must be getting to me! xx

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 7 May 2010 08:49

and yet.......there are references to Derby on both census and he married a girl from Derby! I've looked through to see if he married either of the two Annies I could find on both census but no joy. Mind you, I could be doing it all wrong of course! Cx.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 7 May 2010 11:37

It seems to me that your friend will have to put their hand in their pocket and buy one of the childrens birth certs for the mothers maiden name Cynth ,there are just too many possibilities for a marriage of the parents.
But none seem in the right places and time except of one to an Annie Brown in Lancs

So Annies maiden name is needed..

Unless there were some later children born after june 1911 of course when it would come up on index?

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 7 May 2010 14:19

Thanks FBG. I will pass this on to my friend and see how far she wants to proceed with this. I think her first query was to why they named their son Rowland Prince...!! I just wondered if it had been a surname of someone way back. You're a little gem really. Thanks. Cx.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 7 May 2010 14:20

I searched for that name under the Marriages, also Lacy, but Lacy seems to be taken from the place they lived,Prince is anyones guess..!
