Hi Barbara
The Launcelot married to Dorothy is definately my great grandparents i didnt know they lived in Howden le Wear.
one of the 10 children is my grandmother whilhelmina

However its laucelots father and mother im tracking down

All the info you and other have given me seems to be correct.
I have a quandry that Launcelots jnr seems to be living with William and Mary Best.
they have 5 children all named Best younger than Launcelot
On one census they even call Launcelot Best instead of Brooksbank

This could be Andrews (Lancelot 1861 dad) birth index

Births December (quarter) 1837
Brookbanks Andrew
Castle Ward 25 170

-----------------------------------------------------

I wonder if this is his Death index (maybe working away!!)

Deaths March (quarter) 1869

BROOKSBANK Andrew
age 32
Bradford Y 9b 160

Jonesey Report 12 May 2010 14:06

Dorothy,

Despite the record stating that she is Lancelot's mother in law in 1881 I think that you will find that the woman Mary Best shown in the 1881 census is actually Lancelot's mother who is shown as Mary Browbank in the 1861 and as Mary Best in the1871 and 1881 censuses. If you compare the other "Best" childrens names and birthplaces in the 1881 census to those in the 1871 census you will see they are the same.

Hi Jonesey,
I can't seem to find a marriage for Andrew and Mary --or one for Mary and William Best !! Have you any ideas please.
Best wishes
Barbara

Hi Barbara,

Like yourself I have tried (on Freebmd) without success (So far) to find those marriages. Still working on it however. No sign of Andrew on the 1871 census so he is either dead (The 1869 record seems a possibility) or has done a runner of some kind.

Thank you, Jonesey, Its with so many name changes (or misspellings) but I have tried just with Andrew (no surname) on Ancestry too -- with no surname showing up anything like the one we want

Thanks again

Hi Jonesy and Barbara
Thanks for the very hard work you doing on my behalf

Can i just say that i have seen somewhere , cant remember where ;but i have a note in my book, that William Best was married to Fanny Brooksbank before Mary (Coatman) Best.
This is why im so confused with the Andrew and Mary Brookbank , or the many names thats come up This is what is so confusing. Should i dismiss this information

Regards Dorothy

Hi Dorothy
I saw this marriage the other day and went past it --but don't dismiss anything you have, until we try and get to the bottom of it, Dorothy

Marriages September (quarter) 1862

Best William
Coatman Mary
Durham 10a 337

-------------------------------------------------------------

This looks like the other marriage of William

Marriages June (quarter) 1861

>>Best William
Brian Margaret
>>Brooksbank Fanny
Mann John
Watson John

Stockton 10a 126

the marriages are a bit close though --and i can't find a death for Fanny

Dothery Report 12 May 2010 22:18

Hi barbara and jonsey

Well before the Andrew lead i was looking in vain for the Fanny connection.

i thought that Fanny had launcelot and died in child birth... or just after in this case..... as a lot of women did then ..And the father William Best married her after the birth ...... but ........took him into his marriage with Mary Coatman..........A romantic at heart....
However The Andrew Brooksbank seems more realistic..... I dont know i wish i knew the truth...

Totallly appreciating your help

Dorothy

Hi again Dorothy
As you know for certain that Lancelot and Dorothy were your Great Grandparents you really do need their marriage certificate, This would (hopefully) tell you his fathers name and occupation

This was the one PaulaW found on page 1 of your Posting

Marriage

Marriages Sep 1880 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

>>>Brooksbank Lancelot Auckland 10a 270
HALL Eleanor Auckland 10a 270
>>>Henfrey Dorothy Auckland 10a 270
McGughin John Auckland 10a 270

Which looks the right one to me --they even called one of their sons Henfrey Brooksbank (as on the 1911 census)

If you sent for the certificate, Dorothy, it should settle the mystery of Lancelots father.
Best Wishes

Dothery Report 13 May 2010 12:14

Hi barbara i was sent a attachment of the marriage Cert
Its got Launcelots father down as William Brooksbank
However with all the mix of names it could mean William Best.

Another thing i found out last night

Fanny Brooksbank married June 1861
William Best married June 1861

Mary Coatman married July 1862
William Best married July 1862

I looked up deaths in 1861 and 1862
I found Frances Best july1861 Died in somewhere called Chesson B S Do you think this a hospital in Durham

Whar do you think
Best wishes Dorothy x

Hi Dorothy,
Sorry its taken so long to get back to you, I have"googled" Chesson B S --but I can't find anthing relavant --where did you find this record ?

Is the Lancelot marriage cert, the one for Lancelot and Dorothy?

I'm wondering if Mary wasn't married to ?? Brooksbank , but lived with him and had the children with him and then married William Best. I will take another look later on today.
Best wishes
Barbara xx

Dothery Report 14 May 2010 12:25

Hi Barbara
I think Chesson B S is another misprint
Someone kindly informed me that it would be
Chester-Le-Street which fits....I will have to purchase a copy of the death cert to see if it is my Frances Best
I dont think there is any other way.

The Lancelot and Dorothy marriage cert has lancelots father as William Brooksbank...but could mean Best ..they might have assumed that his name was Brooksbank

Such a puzzle

Best Wishes

Dorothyx

Hi Dorothy
I have been having another look around and still come up with nothing else.

I think I would take a bet on the Birth cert for

Births March (quarter) 1860
BOWERBANK Lancelot
Durham 10a 276

And see what comes back on that !!

Best Wishes

If you live in England, any local records office will have the BMD's for the whole country on microfiche,
