Eringobragh1916 Report 26 May 2010 11:15

Morning Jim....

Will have a look at the Baptisms and see what I can gleam from the info.
There were a few Dempsey families in the MountM/Marybro.area and each named the children more or less the same..as you know this does confuse matters somewhat...
I would put Jeremiah on hold at the moment as he may have been the son of Michaeal Dempsey and Ellen Cotter who also had a son named Edward ...He is listed as living in Marybro.aged 27yrs. (1911) with wife and son Richard aged 1...
I imagine the families are all related through Richard sen.

Hi Eringobragh,
I don't have a house number but Lulabelle did find the entry in the 1911 census which gave the address as Quality Row.
I agree that it is unlikely that Lizzie Brophy was Margarets mother, but I suppose it depends on how young people got married in that day & age.
My thinking that Richard was also in the army was erroneous! I had a senior moment and confused Richard with Patrick (who was Edwards brother). Sorry for any confusion I have caused.
I'm sorry about not posting the baptism records. I received them 5 years ago from Irish Midlands Ancestry. They are a copy of the Portlaoise Parish Baptismal records. The information headings are YEAR,MONTH, SURNAME, CHILD, FATHER, MOTHER, PAGE and the information is as follows:
1882, 10, Dempsey, Edward, Richard, Margaret Brophey, 89.
1883, 11, Dempsey, Mary Anne, Richard, Margaret Brophey, 100
1885, 1, Dempsey, Thomas, Richard, Margaret Brophey, 110.
1886, 3, Dempsey, John, Richard, Margaret Brophey, 119.
1887, 10, Dempsey, Serah, Richard, Margaret Brophey, 131.
1888, 112, Dempsey, Chistie, Richard, Margaret Brophey. 139.
1890, 9, Dempsey, Julia Agnes, Richard, Margaret Brophey, 153.
1892, 5, Dempsey, Joseph, Richard, Margaret Brophey, 2.
1894, 3, Dempsey, Patrick, Richard, Margaret Brophey, 16.
1895, 6, Dempsey, Richard, Richard, Margaret Brophey, 26.
1896, 10, Dempsey, John Joseph, Richard, Margaret Brophey, 38.

Once again thanks so much for all the help you have given.
regards
Jim

Eringobragh1916 Report 25 May 2010 18:41

Evening Jim....
I am sure if you ask someone on here they will help you out with the info you need..I do not use Ancestry or would do it for you...
Does it give you a number of the House in Borris Road where Edward was born (Daft question really when we didnt have them ..but there is a Lizzie Brophy (69yrs) living at house No.9 on the 1911 census...thought at first she may have been Margarets Mother..but Margarets age on the 1911 Census tends to dispel that theory....
I have not seen your original thread with the Baptismal dates etc.
What made you think Edwards father was also in the Army...?

jimbo659 Report 25 May 2010 12:25

Thanks Eringobragh

I didn't have that info although I knew that he was in the Leinster Regt.
I have not been able to get into the records myself as Ancestry will not accept my 'pay & go' card even though there are sufficient funds on it!
It is very frustrating and I am trying to find a way around it.
Meantime many thanks to all of you who have helped me so far.
regards
Jim

Hi Lou
many thanks for the further info.

I did not know of a Jeremiah Dempsey as one of granddads siblings but perhaps he is the 13th child.

My uncle was called Jeremiah so it seems quite possible.

The marriage date for Richard tallies with the information which I have so it seems that I am now on the right track.
Many thanks once again for all the information you have all turned up for me. I don't know where I would be if it wasn't for people such as yourself who are prepared to help us.
regards

Jim

Also this possible marriage for Richard and Margaret, as on the census they say married for 29 years which would fit in with this.

Many thanks Mary - I shall now have something to follow up at last.

My brother & I ( both in our 70's) have been trying for some years to trace our maternal side without very much success but now I have great hopes of an improvement.

Thank you all once again.

Hi Lou,
Yes this is my Grandfathers family. It looks as though he followed his fathers footsteps. I knew that Edward was in the army before 1904 but not his father.
Many thanks
