Choccy is dead on...

1901 RG number: RG13 Piece: 927 Folio: 127 Page: 25
Ecclesiastical District: Brighton St Peter with West Blatchington St Peter
Address: Brighton County: Sussex
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CRISPE, Henry Pauper Inmate Single M 58 1843 General Labourer St Pancras London

Seems he's def in a workhouse, maybe the family could afford for the mother to be there (useful for the wives to look after the children) but not the father?

His marital status could have been assumed by the person giving the details at the workhouse?

Any contributions gratefully accepted.

1881 census has him living in Farnborough as a lodger.

He was a soldier so this might explain his disapearance

Thanks, Mike.

Yes I had this information although he seems to change from George Henry to Henry George on occasions?

I wonder if he might have been committed to the Workhouse through some disability or illness?

Catherine might have reverted back to Bassett due to some embaressment with Mr Crispe?

Mike.

His disability seems to have been lack of cash!

Workhouses are seen in various ways, i think on this occasions he's simply there because they are the ones providing him with work!

They were not just for the poor, they did offer accomodation in exchange for work... i think on this occasion thats the case.

I do wonder if Catherine had got confused over time?

Maybe she hadn't seen George/Henry for a while and assumed his death?

Maybe she had forgotten about him?

Another occassion to request the use of the Doctor's Tardis!!

Just been looking at Bassetts born in Brighton and can find one or two contenders for the missing children??

Mike.

Well.... the only way to be sure would be to order all the Bassett certs and specify the parents concerned when ordering....

Thats expensive, depends on how badly you want the data!
