I've just received an e-mail from the GRO.

Someone has checked the entry and the name does appear to be Daniel which is how I have read it.

Can someone please advise me the best course of action in trying to identify the birth or census entry of my James Garratt.

I have read that the naming pattern can help when trying to identify family so for any one trying to help, the names of James and Emily's children were:

Emily Ann
Abraham
James
Sophia
Elsie May
George

According to the 1911 census they had had 6 children one of whom died and luckily the named Sophia who had died in 1894 aged 1.

Emily's parents were William and Sarah so no children named after them.

Keeping fingers crossed that whoever copied the certificate details made a mistake. This happened to me......my Grandmother married Thomas but on one of the childrens birth certificates the father was listed as James and I accepted it thinking that as we are a pretty mixed up family they had guessed fathers name . But on Ancestry London births, the original birth entry clearly states Thomas so whoever copies out these certificates are not always 100%.

Hi Dea,

I feel such a wally thinking you meant your grandaughter had been born yesterday. I knew I was tired from helping hubby decorate his mums bungalow but I didn't realise I was that tired, oh well I'm glad I made you smile.

Thank you for taking time to try and help me. I have done as you suggested and rung the GRO. They are going to get someone to look at the original entry who will then e-mail me.

I have looked for a female Garratt marrying a Daniel. One possible but think it may have been the other female who married Daniel. That was Mar q 1864 in West Bromwich. This was just in case Daniel wasn't the birth father but step father.

Everyone I have asked to check the certificate says the name is Daniel so not holding out much hope that my e-mail from GRO says anything different.

I guess this may be one of those that doesn't get resolved but still keeping my fingers crossed.

Well, I have been looking for over 2 hours now and still have come up with nothing.. dratt !!!

Will take a break and come back to it later - sorry but I really don't think Daniel existed ???

The cert is a hand-written copy of the register, I think it would be worth ringing the register office and asking them if someone could look at the actual entry in the register and confirm that it does say 'Daniel' ??

LOTS of help needed on this one please!

Sorry Chris - I told you I was a bit 'brain-dead' !!

I didn't mean I had a little grand-daughter born today, - I meant I had a little grand-daughter to 'look after' today !!

You DID make me smile !!!!!

She is 5 - going on 15 !! and such hard work when she is hot and tired!!

SUCH a joy, but she leaves us quite worn out !!

Hi Dea,

James Garratt 28 Widower Miner 41 Bradford Street Daniel Garratt Waggoner

Emily Ingle 19 Spinster - 23 Bridge Street William Ingle Miner

Witnesses were Enoch Reynolds and Hannah Ingle

The entry posted on here from the record search pilot on familysearch also names his father as Daniel. If you don't mind sending me your e-mail address by PM I would be happy to send you a scanned copy to check.

Hi Chris,

I know you said that the witnesses at James's wedding were not Garratts but, could you post ALL the details from that cert please - names, ages, fathers, occupations, addresses + witnesses.

Are you absolutely convinced that the father was Daniel - could the writing be ambiguous on cert, or perhaps it has been copied incorrectly from Parish Register? - Maybe worth a 'phione call to records office to ask them to check for you?

I am really baffled here and would like to sort it out , if I can.

Thanks,

Dea x
