Thanks so much Sylvia, will work to see if this all fits in.

Much appreciated.

Perhaps you can help with this connection...?

My grandmother Margaret McCormick Waller (b1908), her parents owned a Pub, The Salisbury Arms at 159 Wellington Street, Luton. The pub was bombed in WWII, and I believe my g.grandmother was killed & an infant.
I've heard different stories, that perhaps this was a step-mother (grandmother, etc) or maybe it was a step-father, hence a different name?? Clarification would be wonderful.

Thanks,
Aly

I have been following this thread with interest as I live in Luton and the street names are very familiar to me!

Regarding Herbert, did he die in Barton le Clay? I live near to the village and there is only one church there - I wonder if I may be able to find his headstone and send you a photograph?

Alyson

Alyson Report 24 Sep 2010 01:21

Tracey, thanks for jumping in...

I think its quite likely that Herbert lived in Barton le-Clay until his death. I do know that he swam regularly at Bath Road pool until very late in life. He also heard he 'stock-piled' pink champagne & caviar for the celbratory feast after his passing!!! - Quite a character!!!
A photo of his headstone would be wonderful (not sure if I can give my email on these boards??)

Herbert was uncle to my mother, Margaret, and he with my grandfather owned R&B Hats in Luton. Unfortunately my grandfather died by his own hand in 1963 & probably took many a family story to the grave with him.

Thanks again,
Aly, NY

Alyson

what a wonderful offer by Tracey!

No, don't put your email on the open boards

Click on her name, and that will take you to a box so that you can send her a pm (private message) through the GR system. You can then both make arrangements through that as to whether she wants your email address or possibly a snail mail one.

BTW .... not sure that I can help you with your query. I'm not too good on "modern" searches!

Like you, I am not in the UK ....... I'm in Vancouver on the west coast of Canada

If you can give me Herberts full name date of death and age at death I will pop up to Barton cemetery and have a look.....it is a nice little village.

Bath Road swimming pool is still there incidentally! Its very old and there have been plans to pull it down and rebuild it for years!

Hopefully I will go Sunday, its pouring with rain here at the mo so will wait for a dry day!

I will let you know either may and can send you a personal pm with a photo if we get lucky.

Tracey

His full name was Herbert R. Waller & his wife was Edith J. Meacham Waller. I'll have to check with my brother re: age & date of death.
He was eight years older than my grandfather Robert, so his birthdate was 1899 or 1900.
My brother who now lives in Texas, was manager of the Luton Pools/Parks before moving to the US in 1997. I remember the pool when it first opened, we swam at Waller Street pool before then (that's part of the Arndale Centre or whatever its called now??)
Anyway, thanks, I'll see what I can get from my brother today.
Many thanks,
Aly
Sylvia, thanks for the info...A

Lou,
I knew that he died there too...however it was never talked about. We thought he was an infant, but apprently not.
The day of the bombing, was the typical day that the grandchildren had 'tea' with their grandmother. However my mother had a special Brownie meeting scheduled, so she & her brother changed plans and went the day before. Life is so random!
It is believed that the pub was not the target, rather the munitions factory (Vauxhall or similar), another theory..just the dumping of excess bombs before heading back.
Really appreciate the information.
Best,
Aly, NY

Tracey,
Checked with Texas...he thinks Herbert died early to mid 1980's, sorry I can't be more accuarate. He stilled lived in Barton, Manor Road. The funeral aftermath was at the house.
His wife Edith, was using her middle name Jane, at that time, died shortly afterwards.
Not sure if this info is very helpful, but for now its all I have. I'm really in the early stages of Waller tracking,
Thanks for all,
Aly, NY
