Jax, am I potty? Cyril Short wasn't born till 1909, so his wife Marion Duffet wouldn't have died then. I assume my Marion Short died 1949 is better.

Have I missed something?

Ah, I am with it. Yes, he re-married swiftly. I wonder what his wife died of, maybe it was a long illness and Joan helped to nurse her.

I have found that in cases where men or women were widowed and they had young children, then they tended to get married again very quickly......a case of needs must!! Quite often there were only a few months between burying one and getting married again.

Esther Report 5 Jul 2010 19:54

As far as I know he didnt have any children from his first mariage, or if he did Joan never told my mum about them.

Is there anyway of finding out if he had any other children?

Ok, thanks for looking.
I wonder why he got married so soon after? Sadly they only stayed together 4 years.

Esther Report 5 Jul 2010 23:11

Ive just realised, Marions death cert says she died March 1949 and my grandma and grandad were married 11th March 1949!!

I wonder what was going on!

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 5 Jul 2010 23:25

No, I didn't find any births either. The death cert of Marion would give an exact date, it could be early January. But it doesn't hide the fact that your grandparernt got married pretty soon after, and it doesn't tell us why. We may never know.

The marriage was registered 3rd qtr 1949, have you made a mistake with the date of 11th March?

Christine

That's why I wondered if she'd made a mistake, also in the 1st post Esther you said her name was Briscoe but this marriage is Protheroe.

Do we have the wrong marriage?

Christine

jax

jax Report 6 Jul 2010 19:25

I dont think so there is'nt a Briscoe marriage anyway

jax

I can't find another marriage either and there appears to be just one child from this marriage.

Christine

Esther

Esther Report 6 Jul 2010 21:48

oops, sorry about the Briscoe. That was Joans name from her second marriage. Her maiden name was Protheroe.

The marriage for Cyril and Joan was deffinately 11/03/1949. I wonder why it's coming up in the 3rd quarter of the year?

Esther

Esther Report 7 Jul 2010 07:39

My mum was able to get in contact with a lady that knew Joan and Cyril well.
She explained why on the marriage cert his age and the date was wrong and lots of other family secrets regarding this marriage and Cyril's swift departure.
Some of these revelations were quite upsetting to my mother so I think I'll be closing this chapter of our family history for now.

I'd like to thank everyone that has helped find records for me, it's filled in a lot of pieces, thank you so much.

Best wishes

Esther

Oh, that's both interesting and sad, Esther. I hope you can reassure your mother that there is hardly anyone who hasn't got some family traumas and scandals in their ancestry. It isn't anything for her to be ashamed of personally. People struggled with life in ways we don't always understand nowadays. Your grandma married just after the war, a lot of people married in haste then, and it didn't work out.

But your mother has clearly found out things she would rather have not, perhaps, so I think we understand that you don't want to delve any more right now. Come back if you do in the future.

Best wishes to you and your mum.

Margaret
