Not sure,Rose, but in 1881 census it says Henry is 2. So wouldn't this be his birth?
Births Dec 1879
Brewer Henry George Ongar 4a 204

(I know the 1891 says 9....)

Thank you Jax, woodford is spot on! So obviously henry and his mother were split up. Thats a good point I could check the birth for elizabeths brother. Do you think that if elizabeth was born after James Brewer died that maybe her mother gave her the same surname or had to? x

Rambling

Rambling Report 12 Jul 2010 14:32

what you could try is getting the birth cert for Elizabeth's older brother Henry?

just a chance that the father was named on it who could be Elizabeths father too? I think it may be James' death in 1880 and this is the only birth for a Henry at the right time...

EDIT...Samantha go with the birth Maureen has put above :)

Thank you Rose. Based on the books that I am reading it could be anyone perhaps? They were not good times for women. The trilogy by Jennifer worth in the 1950's is so good x

Well that all makes sense then :) very sad that they were in the workhouse... so I'm afraid you won't know Elizabeth's father, but at least you have her mum's side of the family :)

Samantha

Samantha Report 12 Jul 2010 14:21

Henry Samuel is my grandads dad! All in workhouses :(((

Samantha

Samantha Report 12 Jul 2010 14:18

Oh poor things, I am reading a book about the workhouses and they were awful. I have a feeling elizabeth's dad was not james as in 1881 fanny was already widowed x

Don't know if you think this likely but it does seem a coincidence?

the 1891 shows this, I think this is Fanny's son, and I would guess that the 'Emily' below is actually Elizabeth... Fanny's two youngest still in the workhouse

Oh dear thats a shame. As Fanny was widowed to you think maybe she met someone in the workhouse?

Samantha

Samantha Report 12 Jul 2010 14:02

I don't think Elizabeth had the same father as Fanny's other children, as in 1881 she is shown as widowed and Elizabeth was born in 1885 x

Rambling

Rambling Report 12 Jul 2010 14:00

Samantha, it isn't a spelling mistake as such it is Brewer on the image it's just that the transcriber read it as an 'o'...

if you get the marriage cert it should be comfirmed by the fathers names on it.

Samantha

Samantha Report 12 Jul 2010 13:56

Maybe the brower was a spelling mistake? She met him and must have married him young.
