Am having no luck in tracing my great grandparents Edward Hopkins born around 1868 in Portsmouth, Hants and his wife Mary Jane (ne Budd)
My grandfather's name their son was named Frederick H born around 1891He had at least one brother whose name I don't know.

Would be most grateful for any help.

How had you tried to trace them, Maureen, and what are you looking for?

The marriage is quickly found at FreeBMD

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

as is Frederick's birth (no need for inaccurate "around" birthdates).

The parents' marriage certificate will give their fathers' names and their ages at marriage (which the censuses posted by jax provide).

You can look for their births at FreeBMD with that info as well, and also search for them with their parents in earlier censuses. If you don't have access to censuses, others can help with that. You should take a shot at finding their births at FreeBMD, though. You will eventually need their birth certificates to be certain of their parents' identities.

Don't you love fiction stated as fact, jax??

Guessing that someone was "x" age because he had a child in "y" year ... and then stating that birthdate as if there were some basis for it ... just doesn't work.

jax Report 14 Jul 2010 01:07

Also when they say they have been married 34 years....take no notice they mean 25

Many thanks for your suggestions Janey.

I feel cross that people don't thank you for your help (unless I misunderstood you!) I'm sure I wouldn't have got anywhere without the help of all the good people on this website!!

p.s. You wouldn't happen to know how I can print all the info out would you?

I tried and only got the adverts nothing else. Tried installing READABILITY but that will on print half a page for some reason.

Thanks (in hopes)

Thanks so much to all of you. I'm fairly sure the Portsea Island district's the right one.

Have to say I'm so impressed with the level of help and expertise you all have. I'm such a beginner at this!

If I've forgotten to thank anyone then. Apologies!

Regards
Maureen

So who is Harriet Hopkins b 1878? No Harriet Hopkins or Harriet Budd birth, no sign of Mary Jane or Harriet Hopkins/Budd together in 1881.

Plausible births for Edward George, Albert William, Daisy Rosina and Dora Rosina (odd?) - all Hopkins.

There a tree on Ancestry with the family - Mary Jane Budd marries George Reeves in 1876, and, wait for it, DIVORCES HIM in 1885. I've not had a divorce that far back before.

Must delve some more.

He has Harriet Frances Reeves born 5/8/1877, but the only Harriet Frances I can see is called Godden, June qtr.
