People are getting stuck on "surname boards".

For instance, poster Lynn is on the "All" surname board.

People have put "All" in the surname line when they posted general things.

After posting in one of those threads, if you then click directly on Trying to Find, you get taken to the, wait for it, ALL surname board.

So poor Lynn, for one, is stuck there, replying to old threads that had been assigned that "surname" by the original poster.

It will also mean a lot more dredging of old threads, I have no doubt, with people caught in an endless "surname board" loop.

Off to talk about municipal waste collection ...

AAAAAARGH.

Now I know why.

I posted in FBG's thread about how to get into a post.

Then I clicked on TTF.

And here I am, on the "any" surname board ........................

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 19 Nov 2010 21:51

Why was this at the top of the board when I just looked at TTF?

???

Such fun and games!

Anyhow, I wanna know who went to this focus group made the requests they claim to be acting on now!

I'm off shortly to a focus group of my own, on municipal waste collection ...

a huge number of the 11 million or so members are in fact UNPAID members

That's apparently how GR started, with non-paying members

then they instituted a fee which allowed you to use the boards etc ... I think it was about £6 when I joind in 2003. Added Gold last year, and Platinum earlier this year.

You can still join as an unpaid member

That allows you to set up and maintain your tree, search trees, get Hot Matches, read the threads, and reply to pms sent to you

You cannot initiate pms to other members, nor can you post on threads.

If you do not renew your paid membership ........... GR drops you down into the Unpaid category.

That keeps their numbers up, and allows you to access your own tree.

from Facebook

Genes Reunited
We will be selecting people with all different memberships, from *******unpaid members++++++++ to Platinum members, in order to get opinions from all different types of members. As you can image, with such a big member base it would be impossible to get everyone in one room! But I would like to assure you that the boards on Genes Reunited are vigilantly monitored in the hope that we can react to what is being asked for.

If you should ever have a request, please feel free to email [email protected]

What is an unpaid member then - who are paid members
or are they talking about membership fees - if so nice to know we are being represented by lapsed memberships - they really will take an interest

I have just replied to Alex's email as follows

Hi Alex

Thank you for your response

Members are actually posting on whether or not they have been accepted for the survey sessions. So far, they are all from one small sub-group of GR members ............ not a very satisfactory method of obtaining information, and not acceptable under any standards of market surveying!

One suggestion has been made:-

GR has an email address for every member of GR ........ so why not send a short questionnaire to each member, asking for feedback?

Then, contact a smaller number of those members who have responded and ask more detailed questions ..... selecting the names by ballot

Then set up survey groups in different parts of the UK ....... and invite more contributions from overseas members.

Best regards

This is the reply I got from GR in reponse to the one I sent yesterday

Dear Sylvia

Thank you for taking the time to write to us with your feedback

Inevitably, we do receive a lot of feedback and suggestions from our members but please be assured that your email will be individually read by our Management team and that ALL member feedback is taken into account when deciding on future website development.

Thanks again for your views.

I have already emailed the address given and added my thoughts......mainly about the lack of clear guidelines for usage and the fact that the fantastic volunteer researchers are the main reason for the 'success' of this site.

Now don't come over all shy Fans.

Once you're classed as " a paid trained researcher" guess you'd be open to all the insults and expectations that we know have cropped up on the boards before ... but this time you won't have the comeback that you are simply a volunteer and don't need to take such #*%!

Oh, and the "criteria".

For market research, they usually include household income and age (and making sure you don't work for a market research firm -- or Ancestry).

They may want a mix of newbies and old hands, so the screening questions might include something like how long you've been doing family research.

I got to the point where I'd ask the firms I was signed up with for surveys and focus groups (I won't do most market research, but things like opinions on municipal government plans are okay) to ask the rule-out question first. Like, if they're short of people under 40, and don't need any more over 40, ask me that now.

I once got all the way through the screening questions to the last one and got ruled out. No, I did not have a child under 18 with whom I had travelled to Cuba in the last year! But oddly enough, my neighbours across the street did. He was having a heck of a time filling that quota, so he got me to pass a message to them. There are actually lots of families here who holiday in Cuba on package vacations (my sister has twice in the last three years, and I used to travel around there on my own, and my brother lived there for two years), it just isn't easy to find them by cold calling, I guess. ;)

JaneyCanuck Report 15 Jul 2010 17:38

You guyz ...... the "trained researchers" really are trained market research / opinion research types.

Youse never done a focus group?

I used to do them here; got paid $50 and you got a sandwich for supper. I just did it out of curiosity, and because how often do you get paid to have an opinion? ;) I got to evaluate the federal govt's Environment department website, when they were just setting it up. I was thrilled when I found out what it was, when I got there, because I was doing a job right that day that needed a document from Environment -- but when they sat us at computers to check it out, I went to where it should have been, and there was nothing. This was the day when governments were just starting to set up websites! And that one was ugly and messy, and we told 'em so.

That's what it will be about. How easy is the site to use, is it good value for money, what improvements do you want, how do you rate "x" function on a scale of 1 to 10, etc. They may very well be testing out changes they want to make to the site.

Ta, Sylvia, keep it up.

And let us know which form letter you get in reply!
