I agree with you. Problem is finding the names of the other children. 4 out of 5 died as per 1911 census, so I am currently wading through all the deaths, but may have to take pot luck to get one.

Puzzled by your reference to 2 registrations 1885 &1886. I can only find 1on the BMD for 1885. The 1891 census does'nt show him at all and the 1901 census gives his birth as 1826.

Adoption is a possibility I suppose as the 1911 census tells of Richard and Eliza having 5 children of whom only 1 lived. If the surviver was Richard Thomas, then if his mother was Alicia Jennings, Eliza never had any survive, so could have adopted. I am trying to trace the 4 who died with a view to checking a birth cert for mother's name. This is also proving difficult.

This may not be relevant but have noticed there are 2 Richard Thomas Earl's both born Stepney one in 1885 the other 1886, well at least 2 registrations.

You have to search adding an S on the end, 26 is in Ratcliffe......had a look no connection there.

Two Salmon Lanes in Stepney. One in Limehouse and another in Ratcliffe

Formerley usually means maiden name.
Previously is used for a prior married name.

Who registered your father's birth ?
What address does it give for informant?
Is the certificate an exact photcopy of the original or is it typed or hand re-written ?

Norman, I think you need to buy one of the other children's birth certs and compare, for mothers maiden name.

I've been looking for a Salmon Lane, but can't find one except in Somerset, Cambridgeshire or Nottinghamshire.

I thought it might help to trace people living at Salmon Lane in 1881 and 1891.

Have you any more information on Salmon Lane ?

I hav'nt found any evidence of Alicia Jennings marrying anyone or even existing. The father on my father's birth cert is Richard Earl, living at 26 Salmon Lane, supposedly married to Eliza James.

My father Richard Thomas Earl was born 4/7/1885. Birth cert gives Alicia Earl formerly Jennings as mother. Is there a subtle difference between "formerly" and "nee".

My understanding of the request is that Alicia (Alice) had a child (probably Richard - as per census) with Mr Earl whilst he was married to Eliza.................

I may have misinterpreted it, of course, but until Norman returns with further info about his 'desperate' search, it's only conjecture.
