Find Ancestors

I am now totally confused by all of this!!
I cannot put the names etc into any sort of chronological order.
Any help/advice/info - particularly relating to the initial enquiry - will be appreciated.

Ive posted her marriage in Maine USA. I also posted a ships record for 1901

You need to sketch out a time line for Margaret, starting with her birth in 1880...followed by the census details, next the ships record in 1901 and then her marriage to Charles in 1902

It will all make sense when on paper in front of you!

These things take time to solve, you'll have to be patient ;)

Remember we know nothing at all about her or her family

Ann and I posting other past details helps us and others to understand the background

The more we know the better chance we have of finding her

THIS IS WHAT I'VE GOT SO FAR:

1880 - Born Grindleton, Yorkshire - father William born in Luton in 1853 worked as Railway Pointsman. Mother Margaret Cowell born in 1856 in Fleetwood.

1881 - living at Hey Houses Lane, Lytham with Mother (aged 24 and grandmother Ann Hornby aged 61 born in Ireland. This would suggest that she had her son Robert at the age of 15 (or the age approximation on the census was incorrect!) Father William was not listed on the census with them.

Her mother - Margaret Jane was the daughter of Robert Hornby and Ellen Cowell who married on 07/02/1857 - Robert aged 22 was a labourer; Ellen aged 21. His father was Edmund (a farmer) and her father was Richard Cowell a Railway Labourer. It seems probable that Margaret Jane was born before Robert and Ellen married - hence her having the surname Cowell rather than Hornby.

In 1891 she lived at 10 Park Street, Layton with Warbreck with her father William, mother Margaret and sister Lilian (aged 7 and born in Blackpool.)

In 1901 she was living at 13 Blakewater Street, Blackburn as a boarder and working as a Teacher Assistant.

1901 - possibly sailed on Parisian from Liverpool to St. John, New Brunswick - although the name on the passenger list isn't an exact match "Tapper" rather than Tapley.

1902 - 28/02/1902 - possibly married Charles H. Corey in Woodstock, Ca.

1963 - possibly died in Canada.

I know you are more interested in descendants Michael but could not resist looking at the earlier stuff as it is my home area which is always interesting from a local history point of view. I did wonder if you had this birth for Margaret Jane Hornby Cowell - Fylde covers Fleetwood

The Fleetwood/Blackpool stuff interests me enormously as my grandmother Ann Tapley who was the sister of the original Margaret Tapley was also born in Blackpool and worked at the Majestic Hotel in Lytham as Head Cook. My grandfather Albert Edward Slack was a barman there as well!
My uncle on my father's side is buried at Carelton Cemetery; and my uncle (Ann Tapley/Slack's) son eventually retired to Rossall after living in Manchester and both he and his wife were cremated at Carelton and are interred there.
I believe that we still have a cousin (born in 1923 and we believe still alive!) living in Lytham - Hilary Tapley (daughter of Joseph Tapley and Chrissie Sagar)

CAN ANYONE HELP WITH THIS - I'VE TRIED TO MAKE SENSE OF IT AND FAILED.

How does Robert Hornby, Ellen Cowell, and Ann Hornby fit in with Margaret Jane Cowell (who married my great grandfather William Tapley)?

ANY POINTERS/HELP ON THIS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Margaret Jane Hornby Cowell married William Tapley

Margaret was the (illegitimate) daughter of Robert Hornby and Ellen Cowell who married the year after she was born

Robert Hornby was the son of Ann & Edmund Hornby - she could have been lying on the census about her age or just did not really know

would any look-ups at the Lancs record office help?

That is about it - I think - although, I'm not sure that Ann was married to Edmund - in fact I'm not sure what her connection is at all.
Any help is appreciated

I'm the immigrant here, so I've never had to work out how the Canadian system really works

What I do know:---

First, there is NO central Canadian registry for bmds .................... each province has their own listings, so you have to know WHICH province she went to / lived in / married in / died in.

Second, the strict privacy laws will not I believe affect you .................. there are strict 50(or 70) / 80 / 100 year rules for releasing information on the various bmd documents ..... but you should be outside those rules if she died in 1923



I would note that if your only idea of her age is from a census, then 1880 could be out by upto TWO years, so it might be better to be looking for a Margaret Tapley born 1878-1880

The reason the census age is out is that people were asked their age on the night of the census, then that age was changed to year of birth by the modern day transcriber. Depending on when the census was held and on when a person's birthday was ............. you could have this discrepancy.


Try googling Canada bmds or Canadian censuses


OR go to Cyndi's List, and browse through there .... she has lists of all kinds of accessible sites, and I'm pretty certain that she includes Canada

Yes - the whole Cowell/Hornby thing is very confusing.
So any pointers or advice to help me to dcipher it would be very much appreciated - starting with Robert Horby c. 1835 and Ellen Cowell c. 1836 who married on 07/02/1857.
And Ann Hornby who is listed on the 1881 census with Mart. J. Tapley and Mart. L Tapley - - she appeares to have been born in Ireland in 1820 which if she is Robert's father (and Edmund's wife (he is on the marriage certificate as Robert's Father)) would make her 15 when he was born. Either that or she told the data collector the wrong age or she did not really know.

All help/advice/solutions/pointers gratefully accepted.
