Thanks for all this,

I've done a lot of searches on the various sites but not come up with anything other than you've already given me. Then I took out the 14 free trial on Ancestry & bingo!

There's a Dean family tree on there with most of the Brocklebank family on it. I've contacted the tree-holder, who looks to be a direct descendant and am waiting for a reply, they haven't got much background on either family prior to emigrating so they may want to get in touch to fill in gaps in their research.

Here's hoping, & thanks
Julie

There are some ON BMDs at:
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=allCollections&r=0

and also at: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onvsr/

but Ancestry seems to have the most complete and easily searchable set

The most useful general gateway is:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/index-e.html

Drill down there to:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-906.006-e.html#f

In Ontario, civil registration dates from July 1, 1869. The Archives of Ontario holds records of births from 1869 to 1910, marriages from 1869 to 1925, and deaths from 1869 to 1935. Incomplete marriage registers prior to 1869 are also available.

http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/index.aspx

You could always try your local library (or maybe the main one) to see if they got an Ancestry sub you can use at the library.

mac Report 1 Aug 2010 22:58

It's a bit iike that here, some records can be accessed free, then you hit a wall and have to buy an exorbitant sub, or multiile subs because no-one can tell you what you are paying for!

Like I said, I much appreciate your help, if you ever need any UK look-ups let me know & I'll try to return the favour.

Julie

PS forgot to ask, do you know if theres a subscriptrion site where I can find the registgered BMD for Canada?

FYI The 1921 census for Ontario should be released in 2014 - when it'll come online is something else.

There was a census which didn't cover Ontario (just MB SK AB) in 1916 which was released 2009. I think Ancestry and LAC had some deal so Ancestry got online rights for a while, probably in return for indicexing and digitalizing, plus some cash. In the summer of 2013, LAC gets the indices and digitalizations and they (in fact 1851-2016) go online at the LAC site for free - currently there's no free online access to 1861, 1871, 2016 images.

Hi again,

None of the CEF stuff rings any bells, but I pretty sure you've found Robert & son Arthur on the 1911 census. The birth dates tie up, and neither were found on the UK 1911 census.

I think Arthur returned to England, married in 1912 then went back to Canada with his wife Ada (I think Arthur returned in 1913, but can't find an entry for Ada). Robert probably stayed on as Margaret and other children joined him in Oct.1911.

Thanks
Julie

A search of CEF attestation papers at
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php
gets these Brocklebank's (a search for B*bank got nothing extra of interest)

George b 13/7/1872 @Ulverstone nok=bro James @ Birkenhead on 17/4/1916
Henry b 2/12/1891 @Windermere nok=mum Isabel @ Montreal on 23/9/1914
Walter b 23/7/1891 @Windermere nok=mum Mary @ Windermere on 2/6/1916
William James b 16/4/1883 @Lancs nok=mum Anne @ Hawcoat, Barrow-in-F on 14/6/1917

Don't know if there's anyone of interest there

Hi, I agree it's a bit too much of a coincidence for them not to be relations but I'm not sure how. There were so many Brocklebank's around the Dalton area it's difficult to identify who was who. I went back through all the census 1861-1911 for Robert's family, and it is even more confusing. He had 4 sisters and brothers Benjamin (b1861) and Birkett (b 1871).

I can't find anything on Benjamin after he was on the 1871 census with parents (not on census, no death or marriage) and am thinking he must have emigrated, but can only search passenger lists from 1890, no luck. Possibly the family you found are his son and family, if so I think they would have been born in Canada.

Birkett is the confusion according to the June 28 border crossing he had been in Canada from 1902-26 but I have Robert's brother Birkett with mother on 1901 & 1911 census, still single and in Dalton. He was the only Birkett Brocklebank registered 1868-1873 anywhere England, and I've now found his death in 1944, still in the Dalton area.

All of Robert/Margaret's surviving children were in Canada so far I have:

Arthur (b 1890 Dalton) & wife Ada Atkinson married Dalton 1912, no children born UK.

Mary Eleanor, (b 1891 Dalton) m. James Charles Dean, Cobalt 1922

Annie (b 1894 Dalton) & husband Frank Pearson married Dalton 1914, 2 children born Dalton, Ivy (1914) and Edna (1916) - Annie & children arrived back Quebec 16/10/20, no sign of Frank on same ship.

Robert Birkett (b Millom 1902), arrived with mother 1911, must have married Canada/US.

I'm really grateful for everyones help.

Julie

PS, just had a troll through FamilySearch - the F Brocklebank is Frank, born 1885 Hull, Yorkshire, married to Esther Mitchell, they were still in Haileybury in 1911. Frank died Toronto area, but it doesn't say when. (CD144 PIN2788154) so not sure if he's a relative after all.

Hi Chris,
I hadn't really looked at Robert's family as I'd been concentrating on Margaret. Had a better look, and you are right Robert had a brother Birkett, born Dalton (reg Ulverston) in 1871. I can't find him after the 1881 census, but he must have emigrated for Robert/Margaret to have been staying with him.
The Robert Birkett Brocklebank mentioned is Robert/Margarets son who arrived in Quebec with Margaret in 1911, he was born Millom in 1902. From the info it looks like he moved to Florida and could explain Robert/Margaret's trips down there.
Thanks for all the info everyone.

Hello Julie,
I just wondered if Robert abd Birkett are the brothers on the 1881 census in Dalton in Furness...head of the household seems to be a George Harrison (iron miner). Or, could be a different Brocklebank branch!. :-)

This gets more confusing by the minute!

Robert Birkett Brocklebank (born Millom (near Barrow in furness) 1902. arrived with mother on the Empress of Ireland on 12/10/11. I haven't found anthing further on him since then.

Maybe he moved south, and then did'nt record details correctly? Did the crossing info say where they were staying or came from please?

Sorry, Julia, I didn't write that very clearly. Mary didn't go to Florida with her mother, her name was the name of the nearest relative in Canada. I wondered why Margaret named Mary while Robert named son Arthur.
If you'd like me to forward the originals of those border crossings I'd be happy to do so. Just click on my name and send me your email address.

Hi guys, don't know where you get all this, but it is the family I'm after.

I'm surprised Mary Eleanor travelled to Florida so soon after her marriage (no husband?).

Arthur was Margaret & Robert's eldest son, married to Ada (nee Atkinson), but I can't find either of their transits to Canada, despite the fact Ada was a witness at Mary Eleanor's wedding. Not sure who Wiliam McKie is, he doesn't feature in any of their family backgrond.

Annie Brocklebank returned to England, married and went back to Canada
with 2 children. I tried to search as suggested by mgnv, even got down to date & ship but the record was illegible!

Another border crossing 10 Jan. 1922 at Buffalo, NY.
Robert Brocklebank, 50, miner, Cobalt, Canada. Son Arthur, Cobalt. Going to Anthony, Florida (that's the same name that I couldn't make out on the other border crossing.) Going to join William McKee, Anthony, Florida. Says he originally landed in Quebec May 1901 aboard the "Perisisa"?
Also 10 July 1922:
Margaret Brocklebank, 51, Cobalt, Ontario. Daughter Mary, Cobalt. Going to William McKie, Anthony, Florida. Health: General debility due to menopause? (I think that's what it says!

Robert, 51, miner and Margaret, crossed the border at Buffalo, NY, Aug. 1922. Their last permanent address was Cobalt, Ontario, closest relative son Arthur, Cobalt. I can't make out their destination, though.
