Sandy please let us know about the outcome. Thanks.

By the way you said one of the witnesses on Olive's marriage cert was an Eleanor Raive but it must have been her sister Eleanor Rawe. Not an easy name to read in the old fashioned writing!

I have recived a post from another member and we are on the right track with William Miler, her nan and my nan were sister.

Also on the 1911 census is the following information

Willam Miller born 1854 at ABERLADY HADINGTON RESSIDENT

Eleanor Miller wife born 1852 at South Shields

James Miller born1886 son at south Shields

Gertrude E Miller born 1888 daughter at south shields

William Bell born 1830 father in law born at South Shields

The message that i recived confirm Eleanor surname as Bell

I have been looking for William birth place and i think is must be Aberfeldy Haddington

Thank you Sandy

Sandra - if you look up any Chester-le-Street BMD - e.g.:
Marriages Mar 1934 (>99%)
Metcalfe John M Miller Chester-le-S. 10a 911
Miller Olive Metcalf Chester-le-S. 10a 911

and then click on the "Chester-le-S." link, then the more info "here" link, you'll get a list of all the villages, etc., that were in Chester-le-Street RD.
The list includes Birtley.

Here's some lookups using the local rego office index, rather than the GRO index, via:
http://www.northeastbmd.org.uk/

Looks like there was a mistranscription - either in compiling the GRO index, or in making the copy for the GRO, as the local index says:
Details of your chosen Marriage certificate (including spouse) are as follows:
Surname Forename(s) Year District
RAWE William 1909 Durham Northern
MILLER Edith 1909 Durham Northern
Register No. - Entry No. - District
DNCO3 - 390 - Durham Northern (1909)
[I think DNCO refers to Durham Northern - Holy Trinity Pelton -- NB Pelton was in Chester-le-Street RD]
The other couple on the GRO page was the preceeding marr:
Surname Forename(s) Year District
LEIGHTON Forster W 1909 Durham Northern
WOOD Agnes R 1909 Durham Northern
Register No. - Entry No. - District
DNCO3 - 389 - Durham Northern (1909)

The entry # was gotten from the postal application form.

Again using http://www.northeastbmd.org.uk/
William MILLER
Spouse: Eleanor BELL
Register: R 18 Entry: 126
Date: 23/05/1880
Using http://www.southtyneside.info/article/10778/Marriage-indexes
Register R must be the registrar's own register, so a rego office or non-conformist marr that the registrar had to attend pre-1898.
