The IGI has the following extracted baptism for Stephen Knowles:

19 JUN 1840 Brindle, Lancashire, England

Parents given as Mary Mrs Knowles, so it looked like either he was was born after his father died, or his father died shortly after Stephen's birth.

Or Mary was a widow, and the father unknown, as no father's name is given.

I wont be able to find a marriage record for them either because they got married before 1837

you found stephens baptism earlier was his brother josephs recorded him being the oldest his father may be on that???

Have pmed you in reply to yours, but didn't find a baptism online for Joseph, Thomas or Mary Knowles jr.

I think you should do as Somerset girl suggested and send for and see what's on Stephen's birth cert - at the very least you'll get Mary's maiden name and can try tracing her line further back.

My feeling is that Stephen may not have been the child of Mary's late husband, and born too late to be passed off as such. Shame the 1841 didn't give marital status.

The fact that there is no reference to the father would imply that it wasn't Mary's late husband
