"CHOLLERTON is a parish comprising the townships of Barrasfird, Chollerton, Colwell and Swinburn, and Gunnerton and Chipchase. It is bounded by the parishes of Bellingham, Corsenside, Wark, Simonburn, St. John Lee, and Thockrington, and comprises an area of 12,950 acres. The population in 1801, was 1,127; in 1811, 1,162; in 1821, 1,154; in 1831, 1,252; in 1841, 1.129; and in 1851, 1,151 souls. The grater portion of this parish is in a high state of cultivation, and abounds with coal and lime. The rateable value of this parish in £9,030 10s." Sorry now for my late reply! Things can be quite hectic here, even though I am 'on holiday'. Margaret, thank you for the marriage information and Moody Blue, thank you for the census work you carried out! I admit I too was surprised to see Jane and Elizabeth 'interchange' but as you worked out, they are two different spouses of Joseph!

The only trouble with this seems to be that St John Lee, Northumberland (Joseph's birthplace in 1861) is near Hexham, and not that close to Chollerton where Joseph was baptised! Still, I suppose that people don't need to be baptised in their place of birth!

It is a shame we didn't find his parents in this space; I do wonder if they died young between the late 1820s and 1841?! Or even 1851? Thank you for discovering more about my relation Joseph!

Can anyone spot him in 1901 and 1911?

Even though he died in 1911, it was in the June district, so we should be able to see him!
