Jax, you don't have to go back to gambling, you can relax now and stay where you are lol.

It made me really worried that I was going to be thrown off all the sites and have to go back to gambling lol

Hi Jax, i agree, i don't have access to 1911 so can't do lookups, but i thought it was unfare that those of you that do help others, should have your threads removed without an explanation at least.

Yesterday, out of curiosity, i contacted Genes to ask if they could tell me why the 1911 Census lookup threads had been removed, as i thought they were no different to the lookup threads for 1841 - 1901.

I asked, were they removed because they were breaking T&C's or because someone had reported them.

There reply today was -

Dear Netty 935540

Thanks for your email

This appears to be a mistake on behalf of our moderators as 1911 lookups do not breach the terms and conditions of the 'Records office' boards. Please accept our apologies.

Best regards,
Genes Support Team

I think the problem might be not the odd look up done for someone who requests help

BUT the threads offering blanket look ups

There was a similar crack down a couple of years on people offering look ups of census records on ancestry

that led to many of us refraining from straight forward C&P censuses for example .......... we adjusted the records!! I still do

In other words .................

a crack down is nowt unusual .

......................... last time it seemed to be a result of ancestry contacting GR, and GR then getting tough

I suspect much the same has happened here ............. with the difference being that GR and fmp are now under the same umbrella

It is possible to tell where the 1911 record was taken from ...... fmp or the 1911 site itself.

so it might be interesting to see whether there is any distinction in which one is allowed and which is not.

Leaving aside queries from people who don't have subs just for a moment, we mustn't forget that the rest of us also need help from time-to-time. I have both Ancestry and a 1911 sub but have had many occasions when I can't locate a family member or just need an opinion. So at the very least fee-paying members should be able to call on others for advice & help, especially when they first start out.
In addition, I'm sure a lot of people on here keep their subs a bit longer as they enjoy helping others, and might cancel if they can no longer do so. Maybe if the fees were more reasonable more people would subscribe anyway.

I think its a bit unfair-if "friends" want to share info why can't they? I'm lucky to be able to afford my subscription to ancestry and FMP 1911, and use it a lot for my course work as well as genealogy, but a lot of folks struggle to afford just the anual subscription--perhaps genes should think of that before playing Big Brother to its members!!

What's the point of having a Trying To Find forum if we're not actually allowed to print the info we've found in order to help someone?

That's a shame Christine,
just seen this thread and was wondering where your other thread was , after all you are only trying to help,

best wishes

Just logged on, What,s all this about then.

Not helping out much at the moment as i am currently doing my own tree & saving image after image to save onto ftm2010.
I hope this does not change things to much, I rather enjoy helping when i can.
How else am i suppose to control my addiction to this genealogy obsession of mine.

Well, I think we should all know by now that we MUST NOT do look ups of any kind or post Copyright material on these boards any longer.

Edited. Sorry, just realised how my offer may have sounded to some.
It was not intended I can assure you.

So from now on we just tell people to subscribe to the sites themselves??

However offering general access to resources you've bought such as online accounts and CD-ROM data is not allowed. Companies such as S&N Genealogy Supplies, MyFamily.com and the Federation of Family History Societies are strict about copyright and licensing. Breaches of their terms will result in problems for this forum and its members.

Please don't post up anything that infringes anyone's copyright, and this includes threads offering lookups on a subscription website or a CD-ROM etc.

You maybe right Mary

It looks like it is only christine and myself that have been deleted maybe because they were on the first couple of pages?

I also have a thread on TTF but I tend not to use it but it gets dragged up every few weeks.

Maybe I should just delete it myself

Jax.........(I think) other site owners are probably less likely to look at each individual thread and take note of everyone who posts a look up in reply - but they will notice the name of someone offering a look up thread.

Then they may well find that their access to that particular site is restricted or even terminated as against their T&C's.

Thanks for that Joy.
Mary you could be right.

I am now wondering if and when Genes Reunited ceases to exit as we know it, will its Staff members continue to be employed???

jax

jax Report 19 Aug 2010 14:08

I'ts fair enough I suppose, but whats the difference when someone starts their own thread asking for a look up and half a dozen people reply??

So thats 6 or more people searching for the same thing when one person could have done it

Kay????

Kay???? Report 19 Aug 2010 14:07

Everyone who C&P from Ancestry has always been subjected to this condition unless its for personal or professional use only ,c&p saw a hugh rise in Ancestry subs over the last 2 years.

Perhaps a way round it from here and FMP is not to c&p the transcript just details from the transcript a longer process but at least its only putting whats beens found.

Rootschat do not allow any c&p from subcription sites just written found details.
