I shall need to copy and paste so i can so my dad in a form he can read easily but i shall pass it on and he is already taking an interest. He manahed three grocers shops that were hugely popular and am trying to trace photos of them through an edinburgh site. it helpsme to understand who he is and where he came from clearly very poor folk way back. His 1899 death record at SP will be viewable like the marriage certificate -- all my credits have expired so I can't help. But if you do want to know his cause of death, that's what you'll have to look at!

I have now had time to read you post in full this is so interesting and when my father comes up for his 80th birthday I shall be able to tell him for the first time that his grandfather was ashale labourer hard work and possible he died through work, it must have been unusual for poor families to be insured in those days. this is new to me.

I have had no luck finding Christina in the 1871 or 1881 census. Don't know why!

this is quite amazing and answers why cristina was head of the household. my fathers grandfather has died, it would appear quite young. It will be fun to try and find what he died off. as soon as i can i will subscribe againt o scotlands people and use the helpful info above to guideme through. thanks.

That's a pretty specific date so it looks like it was taken from a parish record -- which is what you need, from scotlandspeople.


I was looking for a Christina Wilson with a father James in the 1881 census, because the Scottish naming pattern would make her second son named for her father.

The IGI has this baptism taken from a real parish record:

and search for that birth -- Christina Wilson born 1870 in British Isles, Scotland, with parents James and Elizabeth.

When you click on her name, you get what I copied above. Then click on the C116721 and search for just the father's name: James Wilson. You'll find a Robert Wilson born the following year who could be her brother -- except the mother's name is different, so it would have had to be a quick second marriage!

Christina's age is off a way, but she could have fibbed, or it could be transcribed wrong (you can see the original at scotlandspeople, but not at Ancestry where I took that from).

There's no other Christina Dutton in Uphall in 1901 to account for that one in 1891, and childen born after 1891 also fits.


Did you get the marriage record to see the husband's name?


Oh duh. The address in 1901 is Holigate 121 and the address in 1891 is 121 Holygate. So I think we have the right household. ;)


An annuitant is a person living off an annuity -- an investment that pays them an income for life, usually left to them by a husband or father. It might come from an insurance policy, I think.

i managed it your great for simple to follow instructions. I found the photo and have now mailed the priest to see of they have further records. its funny how each new lead throws up questions, my fathers family were staunch old school church of scotland but the band was linked to a catholic church. as for my grandmother being head of household with wee ones at just 39, makes me really keen to see if i can find out my grandfathers name and what happened to him. I should have known i wuld be hooked before i got the skills but am learning fast thanks to you all

just reading you message properly i have an old photo somewhere of my dad at 16 playing int he bands and indeed it looked a bit like a flute band. i lost most family pics in a flood but will see if i still have it. I cant open this link from this page so shall write it all down and try opening from google or some such. thank.
