Nan.
He may not have been a soldier when Eliza was born ,but became one later?
But I do so hope that it turns out the correct one.
Hope to hear from you soon.

These are the only births that would fit that exact date of birth on freebmd, have you sent for either to be able to rule them out?.
There are none with second name Amy.

Births Jun 1876
PARFITT Elizabeth Andover 2c 211
Births Sep 1876
Parfitt Eliza Mere 5a 217

There is this one in the year before.

Births Sep 1875
Parfitt Elizabeth Pontypool 11a 157

And none in the year 1877 at all as they have second names.

There are also these 2 under the name of Amy that would fit a date of 13 of May birth.

Births Jun 1875
Parfitt Amy Reigate 2a 158
Births Jun 1876
PARFITT Amy Andover 2c 224

Maybe you could try phoning each reg office to see if they can help at all.
Or write to each and state the exact date of birth you are looking for with Father Thomas John Parfitt.
Some reg offices charge a fee for a search, some dont.
Most reg offices charge £9 for a cert and refund you your money if it is not the one you want.
I always include my phone number when writing to reg offices as some like to check any extra particulars before issuing a cert to ensure it is what you want.

Other than this I am all out of ideas now.

Sorry Nan.

Cost me £50 (in the days of £7 certs)to find my Great grandfather so I know this can be expensive but if you do one a every so often it makes it easier to find the money.

27th july 1877. she was Amy Eliza Powell Maitland
I have enquired a little further about my Eliza
her dob was 13.5.1876 she died 20.2.1966 at the age of 89 according to her death cert.
I am told that she had a sister called Jane who at sometime lived in Bournemouth but that is as much as I know about her and she possibly had a brother.
On her marriage cert in 1940 her father was Thomas John Parfitt private soldier (deceased)
She lived as Eliza Huntley for many years and on her daughters birth cert in 1915 is named as Huntley formerly Parfitt even though she didn't marry until 1940 at the age of 63. I have searched BMD but without knowing her mothers surname or where she was born I am drawing a blank. I have searched the census for possibilities for Thomas John but getting nowhere.
I will appreciate any advice you may be able to offer

I now sob into my cuppa...Sorry Nan.

Ok.
Do you have any brothers or sisters names and details for Elizabeth Amy Parfitt please?

What was the date of birth on the cert that came for the Maitland person by the way?

Ive re read all the thread and I think Fanny may well be onto something with the illigitimate birth of Eliza

The only way you will be able to confirm this (or not) is to buy the birth certificate

You can search here for free for BMDs

www.freebmd.org.uk

FannyByGaslight Report 2 Sep 2010 15:22

You can search Freebmd for a marriage ,just as I would.

But if I was to be right you would most likely not find a marriage if she was this child and the P after Eliza Amy stands for Parfitt and she is therefore illegitimate.

Nan

Nan Report 2 Sep 2010 14:58

Is there a marriage record for Thomas Parfitt was he married to a Maitland?
do you have a year and place of birth for him
she definately died 20.02.66 in cardiff I have a copy of her death cert

FannyByGaslight Report 2 Sep 2010 12:51

Wild Theory time for you Nan.

On her marriage she says shes 63 which makes her 1877ish birth, the same as the one Ginny found on Ancestry.

Her Father she says was a Thomas Parfitt, soldier.
That of course COULD have been made up,but going on the assumption its not.

This birth could be a slightly late registration for her.

Births Sep 1877
MAITLAND Eliza Amy P Pancras 1b 73

And the reason I say that is because maybe the P stands for Parfitt and she was born illegitimate ?
I have searched Ancestry for her baptism but it is not on there, nor can I find it anywhere else.

I also can find no trace of her on census or deaths or marriages.

So is this her and born illegitimate she dropped the Maitland in favour of her known fathers name of Parfitt which may be what the P stands for in the birth reg?
But only maybe of course.

Or was she taken in by the Parfitt family as she was one of theirs anyway, although from the wrong side of the blanket.

Only way to find out is to risk the money on ordering it.

That is up to you of course .
There is also the slim possibility that this person left Britain before the 1881 census, but I would not know where to look for passengers before 1890 other than to Australia and do not see her on them.

Nan Report 1 Sep 2010 21:23

No I haven't I will check the date of birth again

Gee

Gee Report 1 Sep 2010 21:15

You said at the start of your post she was born in 1875....there is a tree on Ancestry that gives the same date of birth but 1877?

Have you got info from other trees?

Only if you know where she was born I am afraid.

I will look at all this again tomorrow

I hope your dog is ok got 3 of my own....
just been looking at Elizabeth from Pontypool born 1874, on1881 census. She becomes Eliza A on the 1891 census born 1876 living with mum Joyce dad thomas and brother william plus a few others. I would like to think this may be her but nothing in fact to prove that it is especially as dads profession is coal miner and her marriage cert says he was a soldier. I don't know if she was born in Wales. Her granddaughter is quite sure of the date of birth can I still get hold of a birth certificate with her date of birth and her fathers details?

I am sorry ,I was always c**p at maths and still am by the look of it.

I have had an emergency and had to go to vets with our geriatric Cocker aged 14 as she suddenly collapsed earlier(but is much better now and as normal running about like a puppy) and I will have to give it while to collect my thoughts again and have another look at things.
