"Chris,
I found that ancestry have put all trees, public and private, onto another site which you log into using your ancestry details and then you can see any tree you wish!!"

Please post details of this site.

If Ancestry have done this then they are in breach of their undertaking for privacy.

hi everyone and thanks for your comments.
and sorry lorraine i don't agree with you as far as i'm concerned they are mine they are my relatives and ancestors i have worked hard to fine and cost me a small fortune. plus free bmd and other sites does not give you every thing.
i do open my tree to people who think they have a connection and they do the same for me. if there's no connection they dont copy anything, if there is a connection some say copy what you want, or i will ask permission if i can.and they ask me, and i only take what i regard as my line of family nothing else but this person has taken everyone he is no relation therefore why must he have all names. every time i log in his names there with another load of names from someone elses tree

Hi
My tree on Ancestry is private, but I've just been on this site, and there it is, in full view for anyone to see. My cousins tree is also there in full view, and I can't see it on Ancestry! I've contacted Ancestry, and if I don't get a satisfactory answer, then I will be closing my Ancestry account.

Is the mundia site part of Ancestry ? It seems to be

Daphne Report 9 Sep 2010 19:52

The problem is if you share your Private tree with someone and they then put that information onto a Public tree, whoever looks at the public tree can help themselves to the information.
I have over the years sent information to a relative in the USA and she puts everything onto her Ancestry tree. I've contacted several people who can't tell me what their relationship is to my late parents, just say they saw it on another tree so it must be correct.
Well yes, I know the information is correct, I spent enough time and money researching it, if they had done their own research they would know they had followed the wrong . family.
There's even 1 person has my gg grandfather married to 3 women at the same time and on census records 20 years after his death even though they are showing the actual date of death .

It's Mundia not Munai

You can log in using your Ancestry username and password

this is the discription on the Mundia website

Mundia is the new family history site from Ancestry.com, the leader in online family history and the world's largest online family tree network. Mundia is a truly global platform offering access to more than 10 million family trees from all parts of the world with more than 1 billion profiles. Mundia is available in multiple languages

note the access to 10 million family trees
as i pointed out earlier all tree posted on sites like these are in the public domain and can be copied.

I do not condone copying anyones hard work just pointing out the pitfalls of putting your trees on these sites if you do not want anyone to copy your work.

with regards to people putting the info on their trees and not checking the details a tree on ancestry has my grandmother death in usa, my grandmother never had a passport let alone dying in America. I havent pointed out the mistake to them its there tough luck for not checking their research.

I think you will find whoever you have given permission to view your tree on ancestry can also view your tree on Mundai .
I also had all my names copied by a man on here ,who has so many names it is impossible he has researched them all himself.
I dont see the point myself.

Go onto Mundia and click onto edit for each name you dont want there. Then you can delete them

Private Tree
This setting makes your tree "Private" so that it can't be viewed as a Public Member Tree. Note that the information from your tree will still be indexed for searching, but those who find your information can't view your tree without your permission.
What does this mean?
Even if you don't share your tree, other members can still learn if a specific deceased individual is in your tree, in addition to the birth year and birthplace of the person and your username (but no personal information about you).
They can then contact you anonymously through the Connection Service on Ancestry.com sites to request more information. Keep in mind that members who want to learn from your tree may also have helpful information about your tree to offer you in exchange.
Also prevent your tree from being found in the search index.
Note: although your tree will instantly become public or private, it usually takes about a week or more to be reflected in the search index.
hopefully he cannot see anything i add in future

Just to say that I have a private, non searchable in the indexes, tree, which stays private to me.I also have `branches` of trees with limited info on that are public. This will stop anyone gleaning all your info and you can put the bits of the trees on that you are stuck with...You can have as many trees as you want on Ancestry,so maybe that is worth a try....

I have just checked out my Trees on Mundia.com and it says : This tree is PRIVATE. Only you or people you invite can view this tree.

So I hope this is correct. All other people's trees that I looked at on there are also available on Ancestry as public trees.

But as said before if you give someone else permission to view your tree and they add people from your tree then they make their tree public then your info is included.

I have just checked this out regarding a life story I allowed someone to copy which is now out there on Mundia.

I shall be very careful in future who I allow to see my tree.

My cousins tree on Ancestry is private and I can't view it, there's no need as I have access on Genes, but if I go to this site, there it is in plain view! I don't see how they can say it's private on Ancestry when they put it on here.

hi all
and many thanks for all the info it's really appreciated. and in future i'll be much more careful as to who i open my tree to.
a lady got in touch with me the other day as we share the same ancestors, she told me to look for her tree, unfortunatly i cannot view it as i don't subscribe to ancestry.
just been on that mundia site put in a surname name and there it is i can view her tree. so if this site is part of ancestry and her tree is made private on that site how come i can see it all on mundia?
regards
debbie

For information-
the second bullet point seems appropriate for any one concerned

How do I delete my account?
If you want to delete your Mundia account, click on "My Account" in the upper right hand corner of your logged in home page, then click on “Deactivate my account” in the lower right hand corner of the page. This link will take you to a page that presents you with the following options:
■You can choose to make your Mundia profile not searchable (private) and deactivate your account.
■You can choose to make your Mundia profile not searchable (private), deactivate your account and hide your trees.
■You can choose to permanently and irreversibly delete your Mundia account. You will need to fill in the account cancellation form to do this.

I have read this thread with interest, mainly because I can not afford Ancestry at the moment, logged into the site mentioned and did a search, came up trumps with a connection. Now in contact with a family member, via e.mail.

I have been able to pass on info but more importantly to me are the family photos the contact may have because my family tradition was to burn any photos after a family death. What that is all about I don't know !!

Having said that, my Mum has loads of photos, some going back to the 1890's (?) and we have no idea who they are.

Every negative has a positive.
