What you may not realise, Gillian, is the fact that the GLOSbmd website has all MMN's transcribed..........hence my reference to the anomaly.

If you do, let us know what it says won't you? I am starting to feel like an honorary member of the Workman family ... !

Sorry Jan - I CAN be a bit frustrating..........nice to see that you have a sense of humour though..... ( you made me smile )...

I guess I will probably have to give in and get the cert

thanks again

I know her name is Workman, sometimes children were listed under new husband/partner's name for respectability!
If you don't get that cert soon I might have to get it myself!!

That was one of the first searches Gillian, but speaking personally I couldn't find an obvious match (or an Ada Beckerton either for that matter).

Gillian Report 10 Sep 2010 12:12

Hi

I just had a thought............

Is it possible for someone to find in the 1901 census / probably Dursley area:

Ada Lily Workman who would have been just 1 or 2yrs old ?

It may be that she was staying with her grandparents ??

Thanks in adavance

Gillian

Gillian Report 10 Sep 2010 11:40

Thanks for that ...its very true.

No, not really resisting - just trying to find out & filter out as much info as possible first.

Sometimes its possible to find the info you really need via an 'alternative' route ( ie playing detective )....but othertimes, you just have to 'give in' and get the cert.

as an example - I feel sure that if I could find Sarah Workmans 1st marriage......I would know whether or not she was MY Ada Lily Workmans mum.
If it turns out that Sarahs 1st marriage was not to someone called Joseph that we have the wrong people and I would need a cert to find Adas mum.

If however, Sarah married a Joseph Workman - in the right location, I would probably try to contact one of her decendents to confirm her indentify and to see that I have the right Ada as her daughter.

ps - Certs are so expensive - particulaly if you are in the early stages of identifying someone........

I really do appreciate everyones help here - this one does seem to have been a little more complex that I originally thought

brummiejan Report 10 Sep 2010 11:29

The 1911 might well be wrong, but if that 1902 marriage is correct she was born before the marriage. I have seen loads of cases where the marriage was recorded incorrectly on 1911 census. Not saying it's them, just pointing out that it's not necessarily truthful!

Are you resisting the idea of getting that birth cert?

Gillian Report 10 Sep 2010 11:25

HI Folks

I too think we may be on the wrong tracks here-

MY Joseph Workman is definately the dentist in London ( born in Mold, Wales)

Ada Lily Workman is the person that I am looking to find the parents of ( I believe Joseph is the dad)..........

Ada's grandad was born in Dursley - he was a Weslyan Minister and Ada co-incidently married in Dursley .

I think that the Beckertons could be a red herring - in that Sarah Ann may have been a 'Workman ' with a child - Honor - before their marriage - but, Ada Lily is clearly a Beckerton as she was born after their marriage.

Any one have any other ideas?

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 10 Sep 2010 11:17

Well, I go back to the original idea of getting her birth cert. I agree Choccy, we could be going completley wrong here. It's just to difficult to sort out otherwise.

You could have a search here:

This is just a slog so as well to do it yourself! As mentioned before, the most obvious thing is to get Ada'a birth cert. I suspect she is illegitimate but might be wrong.

Choccy

You beat me too it.....thank you.

So.. Sarah Ann Workman - is there a marriage of a Miss Sarah Ann ?
to a Mr ? Workman somewhere ??

Looking at the 'childrens' ages - I would guess a marriage around 1893??
as Honor was 17 in 1911
