Its great to see that Cathy and FBG have taken up the reins. Thank you both. FBG suggestion that May joined up for WW2 could be a possibility, but without knowing for sure, I can't see how Ian can request and pay £30 for service records without other details.

I was a-wondering..............we can search addresses on English ER at a library. Is it possible to do the same in Scotland? Would it be worth looking to see who was registered at the address given as May's destination in 1960? And perhaps check the following 2 years to see if May was registered...and track her for successive years at that address until she disappears again?

Cathy Report 28 Sep 2010 14:02

Yes I've found her birth and marriage details now Ian and they were married in St Ninians / Stirling by the way.

FannyByGaslight Report 28 Sep 2010 13:50

I did find Patricia 1938 born in Stirling (I think) but thats it.
William does not appear to have been born there, not in 1942 anyway.

Edit.
I dont have access to passenger Flights, dont know anyone who has either, unless they are at the National Archives.

Hi Cathy
I have received a telephone call from NZ this morning from Katryn the granddaughter of May she lives NZ.She was saying that her grandmother was May Graham Smith b 1915 Larbert in Stirlingshire. Scotland she married Matthias Hughes May 1936 and that her mother Patsy b 1938 Torwood Larbert, Stirlingshire it seem that the father of Patsy on her birth certificate was a Adam Armstrong commercial sale man. Patsy Armstrong was the name she was known as was flown out to South Africa with a old Aunt Gillian Anderson.

Cathy

Cathy Report 28 Sep 2010 13:05

Hi Ian,

I can't find a May Graham May or even a May May birth in 1915 in scotlandspeople. There are no May May births in Stirling / Larbert between 1855 and 2009...
Were the children born in Scotland?

Kind regards,

Cathy

FannyByGaslight Report 28 Sep 2010 12:59

A suggestion only.

May went missing after 1942 and returns as a Commercial Driver.
Did she join up during the war and went out to SA or elsewhere with her Corps/Reg?

I do not see a likely one on FMP Passenger lists for her going out.

Do we have a name for the Old Aunt that took Pat out to SA please?

Edts.
I cant find a death for May Graham May in England Wales or Scotland, nor a marriage after 1960,and agree with Cathy on no birth found for her on SP,nor a marriage to Adam Armstrong.

I've had another look for Patricia May or Armstrong B 1938 Glasgow/Scotland) sailing inbound about 1948, but the only one with a sensible age is

Patricia Armstrong
Birth Date: abt 1935
Age: 12
Port of Departure: New York, New York, United States
Arrival Date: 22 Jul 1947
Port of Arrival: Southampton, England
Ship Name: Queen Elizabeth

She is travelling with Austen Armstrong age 33, destination 172 Birchfields, Fallowfield, Manchester.

Don't think she was 'your' Patricia!

If Pat got her age wrong for when she went out to SAfrica with her aunt, we can have another look. As is stands, we're at a dead end.

Hi Det

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 27 Sep 2010 01:18

So now we need to look for

Patricia Armstrong b 1938, incoming from (possibly) SA or a vessel which boarded passengers there, with a destination Scotland.

I did have a quick look as there are several, but were older when they travelled eg 19, or looked as if they were part of a nuclear family group

Hopefully some night owls can have a closer look, cos I'm seeing double! Off to bed now, way past mine.

Hi Det
Strange i was just thinking what as said Pat recalls being taken to South Africa by a old Aunt when she was nine years old that would be around 1947 now i am thinking whats the family connection that took May out there? so pat and her mother were both there a the same time
plot thickens

Nothing there - Ancestry tends to only show outbound from the US, and inbound US, Canada + the UK. But having said that, someone else may be able to come up with it, possibly from FMP which I don't have.

You could alter the title to 'Now FMP passenger lists', or search for free on it and copy and paste anything possible.

What ever you do - DON'T PRESS DELETE BY ACCIDENT!!!

Hi forgive me but would you have access to see if you can see when they left the U.K for South Africa we now know it was between 1942 Williams birth in Falkirk, Stirlingshire and her return in 1960

At least Pat will know what she did for part of the missing years. Perhaps you can now find a marriage or death in GB? Not sure how you go about finding any further records from Rhodesia.

All the best.
