Hi,

I have also looked at several marriages in Stepney and I too have the witness as Ithiel Paice!!! I wonder if this was someone that used to 'stand in' when someone didn't turn up or the people getting married only had one witness???

Jean Report 8 Oct 2010 17:43

As for your suggestion that John would be in the same area as he was married in - that is what I have based my whole search on. The area covered is like a triangle and most families live in the next street to each other or at the very least don't move out of the area.
J.
P.S. I don't know the area at all and have only been to the airport!

Hi Ellen,
Can't have a shoemaker as our father and son were illiterate and had no skills so either worked in the iron foundry or as dock labourers.

Jean,I'm not that familiar with the London areas.Should have thought your John Webb ,would in 1861 be in the area he was married in ,or near.

Hi again Ellen,

John Richard has also been checked out.

I am fairly certain our John will be from the Tower Hamlets area. I have an old map and tracked a triangle from Bow and the surrounding areas mentioned in the census returns for the family. The family has a history of working the docks in hard times and several of them worked on the boats.

They have always registered the births and tend to stick with the same names from one generation to another.

To the best of my knowledge all the census returns are intact for this area.

My favourites which I just can not check out ie I can't find out anymore about them are

John Webb senior 1821 , son John 1842 lodgers living with Hanah Bryant.

Robert Webb 1787 & wife Jane has a grandson John living with them and Robert is a dock labourer.

I have thoroughly checked all the John Webbs from Bethnal Green.

But if our father John came from the other counties and moved into the Tower Hamlets after John 1842's birth then the story gets so complicated as I still can't find 14 of them in the following census returns.

Ihave a wild card entry of John Webb born 1824 St Phillips, Bristol, who married twice, can't find out anything from his first marriage but his second on was to a Sarah Unwin. Still trying to track this one down.

Hi Ellen,

It has taken me nearly an hour to find Archer Zeph Gentle and his Clara Webb.

The married 19 June 1917 and emmigrated to Alameda, Saskatchewan Canada.

Her birth was 17 July 1882 and she died 20 Jun 1969; her father was Charles Webb.

So that means that you have surely found our Clara's death registration.

Have noted the other Johns you have found. They are on my checked list and are not our missing John.

Many thanks
Jeannie

Hi Ellen,
Just to add I made the note about the births some three + years ago but when I have just tried to re-check using FreeBMD there is only our Clara Jane. I DO wish I had made more notations of my searches!

Hi Ellen,
There was also a Clara Webb born in 1876, my Clara 1875. I appreciate that it will probably be her but there is still the doubt as I can't find the other Clara later on either.
