Yes I do have George Ernest Fell's birth certificate 26th Jan 1905 but not Mary Margaret's 1903. George Snr's occupation was a labourer.
Their mother Esther nee Moriarty died 17th October 1909.
Georges occupation is given as a stores porter.
Esther was orphaned as a child, her parents were George Moriarty & Mary McGrath, who married 29th December 1863.

I have the Moriarty info, thats been relatively easy compared to the "Fell" line!
Thanks for helping me!

I would guess that George's age on his first marriage and in the 1911 census are more accurate than the later ages. ("65" at death is kind of a nice round number ...)

George married 17th Jan 1904 and gives his age as 27.

1911 census gives age as 35.

*If* those ages were strictly accurate, his birthday was between Jan 17 and Apr 1.

He would have been 34 on Jan 17, 1911, going by his age at marriage, but he was 35 on Apr 1, 1911. That makes his dob 1876.

But there were only two George Fell births in Q1 and Q2 1876:

Births Jun 1876
FELL George Edward St. Saviour 1d 169
FELL George Herbert Wirral 8a 483

neither in Leeds. The St Saviour one would certainly fit with a Lambeth marriage.

Here's a possibly interesting one in 1881:

Name: George Fell
Age: 6
Estimated birth year: abt 1875
> Relation: Step Son
Mother's Name: Susannah Bond
Where born: Westminster

Civil parish: Brickendon
County/Island: Hertfordshire

> Arthur Bond 30 - builder
Susannah Bond 36
George Fell 6
Alice Bond 4
Rose Bond 3
Arthur Bond 2
Eliza Stewart 15

Marriages Sep 1880
BOND Arthur Hertford 3a 529
Fell Susannah Sarah Hertford 3a 529

(three children in 1881 household born before the marriage)

1871 in St George Hanover Square:

George Fell 45 - licensed victualler
Susanna Fell 31 - born Edmonton

Marriages Mar 1871
Fell George St. Geo. H. Sq. 1a 453
Turner Susanna Sarah St. Geo. H. Sq. 1a 453

Deaths Mar 1872 ?
Fell George 46 Pancras 1b 69

Births Jun 1872 ?
FELL George Frederick Plomesgate 4a 704

Might we have a George who assumed (or said) his father was Frederick, because that was his middle name??

That's a lot of what-if-s, but you never know. ;)

JaneyCanuck Report 14 Oct 2010 18:45

Alice Bond and Rose Bond from the 1881 household are in an Industrial School in Stapleford, Hertfordshire, in 1891.

Deaths Mar 1886 ?
Bond Susannah 40 Chelmsford 4a 240
Deaths Dec 1884
Bond Arthur 34 Hertford 3a 259

Not having any luck finding that George Fell (possibly Bond?) or Arthur Bond in 1891 ...

It's a possibility. With a childhood like that George Fell had -- father likely died before he was born, mother and stepfather likely died when he was a child -- it wouldn't be surprising if he didn't know the details of his birth and parents.

But getting back to Lambeth, I think that was the right idea to start with.

1881

Name: John Fell
Age: 44
Estimated birth year: abt 1837
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Sarah Fell
Where born: Chelmsford, Essex, England

>>> Occupation: Bricklayers Labourer

Civil parish: Newington
County/Island: London
Registration district: St Saviour Southwark

John Fell 44
Sarah Fell 44
John T. Fell 20
>>> George Fell 4 - born Newington
Ann Turner 31 (visitor)
Emma Fell 13

matches with:

Births Jun 1876
FELL George Edward St. Saviour 1d 169

Deaths Sep 1884
FELL John 47 St. Saviour 1d 73

1891 in Newington St Mary

Sarah Fell 44
Emma Fell 23
George Fell 15
- occupation: Chem Druggists Assistant
Sarah Fell 11

1871 in Lambeth

John Fell 34 - fireman
Sarah Fell 33
John T Fell 10
Emma Fell 3
Sarah Fell 8 Months
Harrett Cubitt 61
Elonve Cubitt 13

Marriages Dec 1858
CUBBITT Sarah Lambeth 1d 560
FELL John Lambeth 1d 560

I think I might put my money on this one for now.

I have no idea where the "Leeds" birthplace in 1911 would come into it, it just seems improbable.

Births Sep 1867
Fell Emma Eliza Newington 1d 233

Someone here at GR has Emma in their tree (as born 1868, the age calculated from census age).

My grandmother always said she was born Dundee in Ireland (her geography was'nt much good either). Whether that was what she was told or just a liar we will never know, she was actually born in Stoke Newington.

It makes her sound so mysterious though!
Big Thank-you to you, JaneyCanuck & Rambling Rose, finding George/ Frederick Fell I think has come to a dead end!
Cheers Lynda
