Find Ancestors

Hi, I've hit a dead end on trying to find details from mygrandad's side.
His name is Douglas Richards born in Bridgend 04 Mar 1920, died in 1990 Lancashire.
His dad was William Richards who married Phoebe Watkins in bridgend in dec 1909.

I think there was a sister called Nancy who married a John C Townly but not sure if she is a sister or aunt of my grandad.

There was a brother called Merv, possibly Mervin or Mervyn but again can't find anything close.

Can anyone help me here at all please?

As mentioned freebmd is the easiest, but they only started putting mothers maiden name on late 1911

Nancy was not born in Bridgend so maybe she was not a sister

there was definately a nancy as my mum remembers her but not sure if was grandads sister or aunt.

nancy married Captain John C Townley who was captain of the Queen Mary for a while and my mum seems to remember that Nancy died possibly as recent as 1970's

there was a lady who we called nana peg who lived next door to my grandparents that my mum seems to think was my grandads stepmum.

it all gets a bit confusing though

If you look on freebmd there are quite a few births in that area for those names as they are pretty common in Wales.
They could of been cousins maybe?

ok, I think I have jjust found Mervyns wife as my mum said Phyllis and yes found a match through the freebmd site!

You could always purchase her birth cert to see who her parents were.

I cannot see a marriage for her though

the problem is it is starting to become a bit expensive and although I have paid for 6 months standard use on here and for 15 record views on ancestry, I am using the free records sites that have been mentioned on here which has opened up a few more areas to look at. As well as the software I've bought for the laptop!

I had no idea that researching it was going to be so expensive!

Its not a cheap hobby if you want to do it properly. I have just spent £72 for 6 months on FMP plus it was well over £100 on ancestry for a year.
