Hi Yvonne,

I empathize with you as am researching Tippings in Liverpool too. It's a great big vicious circle! It's been a while since I looked closely at them so I will have a look in the next couple of days and get back to you. I can recall great problems with a Mary Tipping and I have not been able to find a Richard or an Anne Tipping that fit my tree but I know they must be out there some where! I have been told that all Liverpool ( or was it Garston?) Tippings are descended from Joannis Tipping but so far I haven't found a connection.

Thanks Ann of Green Gables, I'll have to look at these to see if there's a connection.

Thanks Mike, I've looked at this over and over and this is the only solution I can come up with. How do I prove it though?

Definately.

My gt gt grandmother remarried under her maiden name and gave her status as spinster ( she'd been married 20 years)
Her son was one of the witnesses !!

Thanks Flick. I wondered because in the 1901 census there's a William Tipping, right age, shown in a lodging house in Liverpool.

To answer the last point..............yes, she could, if she lied.

I am trying to find out what happened to William Tipping. He was my husband's great grandfather. I know for sure that his parents were John Tipping and Ellen Layton. In 1861 & 1871 census his birth is given as 1853 in Allerton, Liverpool - he's living with his parents and siblings. In searching for his birth I only found one for a William Tippin in W. Derby, 1852, and another for Topping in Liverpool, 1854. I'm checking these out to see if parents match up. William married Mary Jenion in 1874 but I couldn't find him in 1881 census. I checked for Mary in 1881 and found her shown as widow lodging in Greenwood St. with a Heaton family and her son, John Henry Tipping. I then looked for a death for William but none of the deaths matched up.
Now this is where it gets strange. I searched for births for their two children, Elizabeth Ellen Tipping (1875) and John Henry Tipping but the only one I could find was for John was a John Henry Houghton Tipping, mother shown as Mary but no father shown??? John Henry was born in 1877 and I'm now wondering if perhaps Mary had him with another man and after this her and William split up and she just said she just told people she was a widow. She re-married in 1885 - could she do this if she was still actually married to William. Am I grasping at straws here?
