Julie -- how to do your own thread, since you asked. ;)

First click on Trying to Find over on the left.
Then click on Remove this Filter up above where Trying to Find is on the left.
Then click on Add Topic, and the page will open for starting a thread.
Read the guidance there carefully (if you don't see it, click on "How to get a fast and accurate response" in the upper right).
Make your subject line informative -- a full name, date and place if possible.
Put only one surname in the surname line (no one will see that; all it does is put your post on the "surname board" in question as well as the complete board).
When you're done, click Submit.
Then repeat steps one and two to see your post as it appears on the board, and click on it to check it over.
You will be able to find it anytime by clicking on "My thread participation" on the left.

That should do it!

Julie

This isn't a lookup thread.....it should have been deleted when the HELP CLINIC was abandoned.

I've looked on Ancestry - there is NO death for the name in 1963 +/- 2 years.

If you want help..... you need to start your own thread.............

Glutton for punishment, that's me, Sylvia!! I'll get my own back - I have missing Smiths in Wales! Where's the evil emoticon?!

Fanny, I'll pm my email address, might be easier!! I've also added to the thread so I can find my way back to it tomorrow.
I won't be around till about 4pm tomorrow but available all weekend so will pop along to Fort George just in case anything has been added to their museum. They encourage people to donate items, slim chance but always worth a try.
They have free access this weekend so might as well use it!

That sounds interesting! If you think I can help, do let me know or if you have a post on here about her then let me know the link and I'll read up on it.
My sister actually lives in Stornoway and I had a look in the library whilst there. They have a lot of old record books and I believe there's a heritage society as well.
What's her name and I can tell you the Gaelic equivalent?

I've found Lily Ham's birth and have added the info to the thread that Janey quoted, just to save anyone else looking.
Her father (Charles Ham) was a Coastguard, mother Eliza Bartlett and they were married in Devonshire on 5th July 1892. Can't make out the place, it looks like Rill or Poll. Perhaps Poole?

I await the 1911 Scotland census impatiently but if the one Im after (If I find it)is in Gaelic will you be able to translate properly for me and maybe others?

Woody's Report 23 Nov 2010 14:13

Ah! That explains a lot! It must be a good fortnight since I last looked on GR.
There do appear to be a few gaps to fill but I suppose it's early days yet. It's a good idea in principle and on the plus side, it must be the first time GR has actually acted on member's comments!!

There seems to be some impatience creeping in though - on the Help Clinic threads that is. If that continues then I reckon not many others will wish to volunteer, should GR ask again. If I wanted to get heckled I'd become an MP and get the spondulacs to go with it!

Re the Welsh transcriptions, that's a very valid point. We don't have the 1911 Census as yet, it's due after April 2011, but the images we will see are from the enumerator's books. Therefore, any written in Gaelic will already have been translated by said enumerator. Could be fun!

Woody
All the yellow stars have now been given out on a first come first served basis,10 in all, which GR have deemed is enough to man the board 24/7 but is woefully lacking in night shift workers, none to be precise it would seem at the moment.
It would seem not one specialises in Scottish affairs, nor so far have I seen one that specialises in Welsh research, which does make me wonder if they will be able to translate any of the 1911 census that were done in Welsh,of which I have come across quite a few and had people ask me to translate.
No Canadian specialists,no Ozzie specialists and no American specialists,in fact from what I can see no one has expertise in one given area but rather of doing lookups although there are some good researchers on there none speciaise in one given thing as far as I can see...................

I'm also a bit perturbed by some of the "can't find" answers.
Others, like me, who have been using SP for years have learned by their mistakes (usually costly!) and now know how to get value for money from the site.

For instance, I saw someone with the name MacLeod. For that (or any Mac name) you are better to enter M*c as that will give results for Mac/Mc or even M'c. That is much preferrable to the soundex option.

Some queries are never going to get an answer simply because sometimes the information is not available, even in SP's massive database!

OPR entries relate to events pertaining to the Church of Scotland, so if your ancestor was Free or Free Presbyterian, RC or any other denomination, there will not be an entry.
It was also not compulsory to enter baptisms and some churches made quite a hefty charge so people couldn't afford the cost.
In some cases, children would be baptised years later when perhaps there was money available or, most likely, a new minister on the scene! So, if your birth was in 1830, you need to be flexible with the date in case there is a much later baptism.

The OPR deaths are often just a list of names but in some cases the names can be those of the owner of the lair. If they had a headstone, much more info can be obtained from an inscription. All Scottish FHS are trying to photograph and transcribe as many headstones in as many cemetries as possible, as are some dedicated individuals. Therefore, any queries may be better directed towards a Scottish site or even the FHS in the relevant area.
The Help Clinic is a good idea, but BMD's are only a small part of the research as you are probably aware!

I see a few folk on this thread who also know their stuff so you may be wondering why we do not apply for this yellow star. In my case, I barely have time to use GR as I belong to another site - yes, a Scottish one!! - where we do BMDs but also much, much more!
Our credits aren't free though, we pay for our own, so we have to narrow down criteria instead of opening every image. Sometimes we just give the details so that members can find the image for themselves and will thus have the image on their own SP accounts.
I would therefore have a conflict of interest and would naturally direct posters to where they would get the best advice, which sometimes is not on here despite the well-intentioned efforts of helpers, with or without a yellow star.

By the way, the availability of discounted SP starter packs and vouchers in Scottish libraries and Archive centres could well end once the cutbacks start to bite.
