Emma Report 30 Nov 2010 12:59

thank you everyone for taking to time to have a look, i thought it was just me being a novice which was why i was having so much trouble trying to piece this together but it seems not. I am seraching ayrshire as this is the birthplace stated on the census in 1911.

May have to consider that trip to scotland to investigate a little bit further me thinks, however i will try and find the marriage certifcate for robert and margaret and see if this brings me a ny closer to martin.

I'd agree rootgatherer, I found a few census returns but they suggested Ireland, it's hard with a name that peopel I guess wrote as they heard it!

Emma

Not any help I know! When you first posted I looked on Ancestry for various combinations of the surname McGlachie in Ayrshire with no success. The fact that his father's christian name is Martin, I wondered if the family may have originated from Ireland so I tried looking for a Martin with the birthplace Ireland with no success. If you think of the surname McGlackie with an Irish accent there are several possibilities. I tried search Ancestry just using McGl* with no success. I am wondering if your ancestor just thought that he was born in Ayrshire but was born elsewhere and raised in Ayrshire.

Sorry I can't be more help.

Hi Helen,

Nothing for a Martin anywhere...I have only used the search surname of M*chie so it should have returned a few results but nothing for a Martin.

No idea on his mother;s name?

There are a couple that may fit in the 1894 scottish census but with differing variations of the surname again, do you want me to post those (I don't want to waste anyones time!)

You will need to contact SP if you are having difficulty accessing.

there's one on the census which it will allow me to access, do not know the names yet but if i could piece together the martin mcglachie part they might be the next step, there's a match in the statuatory death section, old parish births, 2 in old parish deaths, and 2 in catholic baptisms. however when i click to view these records it takes me back to home search screen, it would be interesting to see what these other records could be,

i am having trouble finding any robert martin in 1886 between those dates, but i have put in m*glachie and it brings up results but when i click on view it just takes me back to home screen, do you have any experience with this site, do i need to buy different creditd for different results?

Emma

Emma Report 29 Nov 2010 16:17

hi helen i have looked at the pages looking at just robert, and there doesn't look to be anything coming up which i believe could be a match. i am now looking at robert martin with no surname but i have not found this one in 1886 as you said, i've looked between 1880-1890 aswell as your dates and it only comes with 3 results

Emma

Emma Report 28 Nov 2010 19:01

the next step for me is to find the marriager cert from roberts second marriage to margaret johnson (1896-1959) to see if this gives me any more information on martin mcglachie

Emma

Emma Report 28 Nov 2010 15:18

thank you for all of your help, i have tried a number of different variant spelling on scotlands peopole and just keep coming up blank, heres where the story ends i feel, i dont know which other way to take my search now.

sorry mike there are witness' i assumed these were the names of the registrars one is clearly emily fowler, the other is i believe rose dadbon (alotho i can only really guess adbon the 1st letter is questionable) would they however have 2 female witness'?

on the marraiage certifiacte it doesn't say anything about marting being deceased
