Im looking for information about WILLIAM EDWIN COOTER's time as a coast guard.

WILLIAM was born on the 19th June 1825 in ?Bath?. He joined the navy in 1945 (aged 20) and was based in Kent.

He married SUSANNAH COLLINS in 1845. The first Census I have of his residence in in 1861, he was a Coastguard living in COASTGUARD HOUSE in Ramsgate.

Name: William E Cooter
Age: 35
Estimated birth year: abt 1826
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Susanna Cooter
Gender: Male
Where born: Daventon, Kent, England
Civil Parish: Thanet St Peter
Ecclesiastical parish: Broadstairs
County/Island: Kent
Country: England
Street address:
Occupation: Coastguard/ Boatman
Condition as to marriage:

Susanna Cooter 29
Ann E Cooter 11
William F Cooter 9
Henrietta A Cooter 5

So, by this time i'm guessing he'd left the navy.

Can anybody help me find any information about his time as a COASTGUARD. He was however a greenwich pensioner but 1871.

Thanks :-)

If he was born in Bath then this may be his record at the NA

His Naval records say he was born in bath

His Marriage cert says his fathers name was Richard

Erika

Erika Report 1 Dec 2010 15:50

safc - where did you find that record?

Erika

Erika Report 1 Dec 2010 19:28

Im now questioning whether the naval records are correct.

I obtained them from another ancestry member who had been to KEW.

This is the only record that says he was born in BATH.

Have had another look on NA (not really sure how to use) and found a record for a William Cooter who joined the coast guards at 14. Im really just not sure :-S

The thing is. If this is the right person and he wasnt in the navy. Why does his marriage cert say that his father was Richard? This would contradicct SAFC's finding of father Robert, Mother Elizabeth.

Help :-(

There's this record at the National Archives which says that he joined 1839 - perhaps the record from documentsonline is for a different man?

Hi Ann,

I have those naval records you mention from the national archives....
I always thought it was the same William but always wondered why I the birthplace was Bath when all the censuses say Davington, Kent.

Ive searched high and low but have found nothing of a matching William in Bath. His marriage cert says his father was Richard - Still nothing.

I am questioning whether those naval records are the correct person afterall as there is also a William Cooter who joined the coast guard at 14 and all the dates match up.

If only I could find the 1851 census when he would have been married to Susannah. It might explain a bit more

xx

Erika

Erika Report 5 Dec 2010 10:39

I have that one but I was unsure how correct it was........

Do you know if being part of the coastguard was anything to do with the navy back in the 1800's?

Erika

Erika Report 5 Dec 2010 14:33

I shall hunt out the naval records I have and double check where he was in 1851. The naval records did say that he was on a boat in 1848 when he got married. I couldnt work this out but like I say I shall double check.

I think he was on a boat in 1851........

If he was not in the coast guards till 1861 do you think this is a totally different person

Ok so I stand total corrected. I just dug out the Williams Naval records and what I origionally thought, was right.

He joined the navy and was on various ships. The last being the WATERLOO 26 AUG 57 to 3 SEPT 57. There is then an entry underneath which says COASTGUARD 4TH SEPT to 12 ? 65, Boatman with other dates under that entry. Still slightly confused with what it means.

The naval records do indeed say he was born in Bath, Bristol. Which totally contradicts what his birth was in the censuses (DAVINGTON,KENT)

So if WILLIAM was born in Bath, Bristol - was his father Richard as it says on his marriage cert or Robert that is says on the entry on Family Search BETA (given by SAFC) ?

Locating him and identifying the parents is gonna be difficult if I can't find a birth reg.

He was in the navy on a ship when the 1841 census was taken.

Heeeeellllllpppppp :-)

At his son William Freythe's baptism William is described as a Mariner. Unlikely to have been in the navy at that time as they were described as RN in the records.
