Mark Report 4 Dec 2010 13:45

Hi folks, trying to find details of my 4xgreat grandfather Richard Tennant birth c1791 lancashire / manchester who married Mary Aneley birth c1791 and had at least 11 children including my 3x grandfather Walton tennant b1830 Manchester d1886 Manchester, who's widow and some children emigrated to Chicago. Seems ridiculous that I cannot find any further details for Richard & Mary seeing as there are so many records for their children. any help is much appreciated. I Have extensive info on both the Tennant and Leicester family with some certificates and photographs.

Thanks,

Mark.

Manchester is a large area with many parishes, most of which are not searchable on-line. The above website is free to search, and may have some information of use. Otherwise have you tried the beta site of familysearch.org?

You state Richard Tennant bc.1791 Lancashire/Manchester. However, the 1841 Census for Manchester shows Richard was not born in Lancashire. Under 'Born in County' it states N for no.

Annette

Annette

Annette Report 5 Dec 2010 01:15

Ages on 1841 Census were rounded down and so Richard could have been born between 1787 and 1791. Mary is shown as born in Lancashire and familysearch pilot site shows:

Mary Aneley bp.20/10/1788 Broughton in Furness, dau. of John and Anne.

Two possibilities for Richard are:

Richard Tennant bp.10/10/1787 Wakefield, Yorkshire son of Richard and Clamentia (? - as transcribed, suspect this should read Clementina).

Richard bp.1/3/1789 Bossall, Yorkshire son of Richard and Sarah.

As one of Richard and Mary's daughters was Ann Clementina bp.24/4/1817 Manchester suspect Richard may well have been the one baptised in Wakefield. Clementina was not a common name.

hi, thanks everyone for the replies, I still cannot get concrete evidence that links Richard and Mary as parents of Walton, in respect of if Richard was from Yorkshire. I also have birth records from some of their children including John and Mary, both of whom have the middle name of Aneley, confirming my Richard and mary (Aneley) as their parents but nothing else. Thanks annette for the info about ages being rounded down on the 1841 census, I didn't know that. I too thought that Mary might have been born in Broughton in Furness but still no evidence of that Mary linked with Richard.

Mark Report 18 Dec 2010 20:18

PS family search beta has records of births to Richard and Mary both in Manchester (with middle name aneley) and in Skipton. The dates conflict with baptisms taking place at the same time so likely that they were two different couples otherwise they would have been constantly back and forward between Manchester & Skipton and seeing as there appeared to be triplets in John, Samuel & Richard Jr that would seem even more unlikely with the sheer number of children involved.

The sons are not triplets. They were just baptised together. 1841 census has them as different ages.

Hi Ozibird, Walton died around 1886 in Manchester and as far as I can gather, his son Richard went to Chicago in 1887 with Walton's widow Eliza following with other children in 1887/88. I can only confirm Charles Thomas Tennant that stayed as he was my great great grandfather. Some reportedly made money but lost it in the wall st. crash. Walton & Eliza's son Arthur married into the famous Weld family (marrying Ella Mae) and living in De Witt, Clinton, Illinois. I have photos of Eliza and her sons taken at a chicago photographers. I have so much info it is so frustrating not be able to progress beyond Richard and Mary. It looks like Richard, John, Arthur, Walter & william (married De Lora Maclamore from Kentucky) all went to USA with only CT staying in Horwich. Mark.

Sorry, my slip-up. Thought you meant Mary, wife of Richard, went to Chicago.

"I still cannot get concrete evidence that links Richard and Mary as parents of Walton" If you have followed the census for this family, why do you doubt Walton's parentage? You have found his baptism, and his family in 1841.

" I too thought that Mary might have been born in Broughton in Furness" - that is what is recorded for her on the 1861 census when she is living with daughters, Ann & Eliza. Update: also 1871.

Has this child any close connection to Walton? She is living/staying with another two siblings of Walton's.

Fantastic, you are a star! I know Walton spent time in the USA which is probably why he disappears from some census. I got that from an account of Arthur his son from an Illinois publication;

(Was for Ella Tennant's mums obituary - wrongly shows Walton as Walter but could have been a nickname I guess)

Mrs. Weld became the mother of three children: Nellie, who died at the age of fifteen months; Fannie, who lives with her mother; and Ella May, wife of Arthur G. Tennant, who is a clerk in the employ of the Illinois Central Railroad at Clinton. He was born in Lancastershire, England, and is a son of Walter and Eliza (Bradbury) Tennant. His father lived for some years in America, but died in England, and his mother, who is a native of Yorkshire, now makes her home in Chicago. They had nine children, of whom seven are still living. To Arthur G. Tennant and wife have been born two children: William Weld and Fannie Evelyn. They have a fine large residence on the corner of North Jackson avenue and West Johnson street, Clinton, which was erected by Mr. Tennant at a cost of thirty-five hundred dollars, and with them resides Mrs. Weld, who now rents her home in that city. She still owns the farm on one hundred and eight-six acres of highly developed land in Texas township, left to her by Mr. Weld, which she rents. In addition to this she owns one hundred acres near Maroa, which is also rented. These farms are well-improved, there being good two-story residences and new barns upon both.
