Thanks for everything, Janey, I managed to speak to my aunt who was married to William and Ethels son (Charlie) and she has told me that he was with Annie and then with Hilda so what you have found seems to be correct, also looks as if he changed names between William and Charlie Seems he was a bit of a lad! She told me she has a number somewhere for the youngest son, Billy and will get it to me. Maybe he will have some info for me.

Have receuved PMs from Julie explaining some of her confusion.

Name: Charles W Skinner
Death Registration Month/Year: 1968
Age at death (estimated): 67
Registration district: Bradford
Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding
Volume: 2b
Page: 103

You have now said: William Charles, Q4 1899.

This death was in Q1 1968.

So a person born in Q4 1899 was 68 years old in Q1 1968.

But the people reporting deaths of someone born that long ago quite commonly didn't have the year right. (My grandfather only found out he was born in 1901, not 1900, when he retired and had to get his birth certificate.)

I think that's the likeliest one we've found so far.

Have also found a possible remarriage which I will send by PM.

I know for sure he died in Bradford, I went to the funeral and he had just come out of Bradford Royal Infirmay and died at home. I wonder if it is possible to use the local newspaper records?

I never even thought about his age during the war, I can only go on what I was told as a kid, he may have been in the Home Guard or something, I know which barracks were in Bradford (Belle Vue) is it possible to search their records?
Thanks again for all the help

How do you know the 1899 birth is his? there is this one in Bradford

Births Mar 1897 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Skinner William Charles Bradford, Y. 9b 112

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also you say William was in the army during the war, unusual seeing as he was in his 40s do you have his ww2 records ?

I'm glad you appreciate the efforts to help, and wish you well.

If you decide to provide any other information you haven't bothered to offer yet, I'm sure someone will be interested.

You started out saying you are looking for information about William Skinner.

Now you disclose that you have his birth registration info. If you haven't got the birth certificate, I guess that's the next step, if that would supply whatever info you are looking for; I can't tell what that might be.

Meanwhile ... There Is No William (C) Skinner death in Yorkshire 1965-1970.

And I guess we still don't know what all this info you have about Ethel Cash is, but maybe you'll say sometime.

There is a death for a William C Skinner, aged 69, in London in 1968. Is it possible that he lived in Bradford but died elsewhere?

I was around 14 when he died and attended the funeral, he died in West Bowling, Bradford it may have been 1966 but it was certainly no earlier. I transcribe for FreeBMD and found his birth quite easily, His middle name was Charles and he was born in 1899 4Q registered in West Ham 4a district.

JaneyCanuck Report 7 Dec 2010 16:01

Yes, I did say, many posts ago:

The youngest child was born 1938 in East Ham.
(There was also a child Eileen, born 1929, died 1930.)
So the 1930 death would not fit.

(I discounted the Finsbury birth as making very little difference, time-wise, even if relevant -- there doesn't seem to be another Skinner-Cash marriage to account for it, however.)

And that the 1900 birth in West Ham was the only one that made sense.

This is the only death that resembles your info for William:

Name: William Skinner
Birth Date: 22 Apr 1897
Death Registration Month/Year: 1971
Registration district: Bradford
Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding
Volume: 2b
Page: 707

The only William (no middle name) Skinner birth registered in Q2 1897:

Births Jun 1897
Skinner William Brentford 3a 157

(Maybe William and Ethel both invented middle names for themselves when they married??)

Since we don't know William's middle name (until the marriage certificate arrives), there is also this Yorkshire death:

Name: William Christopher Skinner
Birth Date: 19 Feb 1904
Death Registration Month/Year: 1970
Registration district: Holderness
Inferred County: Yorkshire East Riding
Volume: 2a
Page: 305

The corresponding birth:

Births Jun 1904
Skinner William Christopher Hull 9d 269

There just isn't a William Skinner death 1967/68 in Yorkshire.

Thanks for the info rootgatherer. The last child Ethel and William had was also called William and he was born in 1938 but maybe there was another after. I can only say that as far as I know Ethel died in the war, that is what I was told as a child (William and Ethel were my grandparents) I know 2 of their children are still alive but unfortunately I have no contact with them, I was told that the eldest child Ena was taken into domestic service and the other 3 were put in care. William died in 1967/8 in Bradford, West Yorkshire as that is where he was living and I know he had married again or was living with someone, I have ordered the marriage cert so maybe that will help.

Looks like the last child was born in Finsbury, London in 1939.

Are you sure that Ethel died during the war?

Who brought the children up please?

When did William die please?

Hi Mike, that is definitely not the right death as her children were born in the 1930's, one of them was my mother, born in 1932, she told me her mother died during the war.

Her father was John Mansfield Cash and her mother was Mary Ann, nee Jaggers. They had at least 6 children and he had one from an earlier marriage.

I live abroad at the moment so getting certs is difficult, however I will be in the UK for the New Year so might try and sort something then,
Thanks again to everyone for their help.

Why would the death Katie posted not be your Ethel? -- If she did die during the war, that is, otherwise the death Mike posted looks reasonable.

Is the dob for William, around 1900, taken from their marriage certificate? If you want info about him, you have to start with that marriage certificate, to get his full name and his age and father's name.

Could you give the link to your other thread, please?

The youngest child was born 1938 in East Ham.

(There was also a child Eileen, born 1929, died 1930.)

So the 1930 death would not fit.

This doesn't make sense:

"i am trying to find info on the one born around 1900, she married William Skinner in 1924, i have loads of info on her, it is William I am trying to research."

If you have loads of info on her, what is it?? Her date of birth (not "around"), her name, her parents' / siblings names ...?

The 1909 birth in Norwich is the only Ethel F Cash birth 1890-1912.

This birth really is the only one that makes sense:

Births Sep 1900
Cash Ethel Maud W.Ham 4a 328

Possibly there's an error in the marriage index re her initial (I checked the image and it does say F), or she had just decided to adopt a different middle name.

You certainly need the marriage certificate in order to look for any more info about either person.

Sorry about the confusion, you are right she was Ethel F. I know William was born around 1900 and died in 1967/8. He remarried after Ethel died, which as far as I know was during WW2, although I can't find her death as yet. i have been told the the kids were taken into care, but I don't know if this is true. Many thanks for all your help.
