DameShelley means Deed Poll, which is entirely possible. You can search GazettesOnline to see if any name change was reported.

Have to ask wife about his old friends and last address.

Thanks Liz47. The Stephen on this site copied the name from my site as he already is one of my matches.

Thanks everyone for your help in this matter.
Need to try and find paperwork if my wife still has any about his previous addresses as well as work.

Wish me luck.

I think that in light of him possibly not ever been reported as a missing person does mean you are limited in what can be searched for - for instance -

The police would be able to look into bank details to see if any of his bank accounts have been touched.

If you had a last known address for him it could have been looked into for instance did he own his own house or rent?

The police could contact his doctor / dentist etc from that time, perhaps see if his details are on any NHS registers if he has moved areas to another doctor.

However without the police doing these investigations, you wont get this information.

Probably good to start off with something in the local paper, he must have had friends in the area who might know something.

None of the statutory authorities nor employers can give out information to either you or your wife, haven't been able to do this for years and it's now covered by the data protection act.

IF he was ever reported missing at the time (ie back around the time he legged-it) there would be a police file, from what I can gather they would search the last known address, but if there were no suspicious circumstances it would just be logged as a misper and no further action taken. If he was reported they would only re-open the case if you have new evidence that there were suspicious circumstances surrounding the disappearance. If he wasn't reported then they will be of no help.

It looks like he wasn't married at 37 then?

What about school friends and co-workers? Do you have his last address?

ALEXWOOZLE:
I asked a policeman about this and he said that it would have to be my wife that asked.
Didn't think about DVLA.
Also checked the Huntington's Chorea charity as that disease runs in the family.
They said that they would not give out any information and it would have to be my wife that asked and even if found he would have to give permission.

No. Didn't even think to look there. Too busy with ancestry sites. Had a few interesting searches including one about Wilkinson Lemaonade Factory in North Shields that was blown up with approx 200 dead in 1941. It was owned and run by my wifes Great grand parents. Cant find any record about that side of family after that except for my wifes grandmother.

Will check Facebook and Friends reunited.

Will have to go out shortly as taking wife to her works christmas party.

If he was ever notified as being Missing - could the police not assist with some investigations? Such as - has he ever had a passport, has that been used since he disappeared? National Insurance contributions?

I notice you have mentioned HMRC - I guess about paying taxes etc?

DVLA for driving licence / car registrations?

What about any friends he had, like a best friend who he might have kept in touch with?

I'm sure these avenues have been checked anyway, but you never know!

I am not sure what notices were put out apart from getting the PI's to search.
Have to get more information from my wife before checking further.
FLICK i forgot about that posting as had chaos with job hunting, wife in hospital and moving sister from one care home to another. The one i remember was about Gertrude Wilkinson which was done end October.
Sorry.
I have just tried North Walsham Registry (birth district) to see if they can help and still waiting for them to get back to me.
He used to work with various companies at Heathrow in airfreight. Unfortunately when checking we found those particular companies are out of business and the ones that are still going from that time have no record of him.
OH WELL, Have a happy christmas everyone

If it was just a family fall out, no need to try to cover his tracks, maybe there is a marriage for him after 1983? There's a few Jonathan marriages, with various other initials on FMP.

If he 'fell out' with his sisters, he may well not wish them to find him
