Searching for info on My GGfather William Chamberlain Sharpe (b c1877) from the Bourne, Lincs/Eye area, married Eliza Moi(y)sey. He worked on the Railways in the Bourne area, and reputedly left to go to Canada,(not sure when but probably between 1901 and 1911) to work on the railways there. He was never to be heard of again- assumed killed by the savage weather, leaving a wife and 3 daughters, Evelyn, Dorothy and Irene ( my grandmother),all born bwn 1903-6. we can find no mention of him on passenger lists, or emigrating. One daughter either Evelyn or Dorothy, was killed as a young woman in a motorcycle accident at Colsterworth crossroads probablyin the early 1930's , leaving a small daughter Mary aged about 5 who was brought up for several years by her aunt Irene Larkinson, with her children including my father Barry.I have only just discovered this info, and would so like to find out what happened to both William and if possible Mary, whose father remarried and later took her to life in or near Leicester. Appreciate info is somewhat vague, but any good detectives out there?

But no birth for Dorothy or Evelyn in Bourn, so a different area of Lincolnshire?

I may have him in the 1911 Cdn census!

http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=26477

This takes you directly to the "split view" -- free access -- showing both the transcript and the original census image.

Sharpe William Male Boarder Single Sep 1876 34

The image says:

born in England, immigrated 1906, occupation *Engineer*.

The household seems to be a large boarding house.

(My gr-grfather immigrated to Ontario with wife and kids a couple of years later -- also a railway worker. I think there were likely a lot of opportunities here for railway occupations.)

Wow! thanks you guys, very impressive.
The distant cousin who contacted me says "Evelyn married Oliver Drakard Gilbert in 1926 at Bourne and had children Gerald 1928 and twins Christine and Noel in 1933". So I am now assuming Doris is the sister who was killed, and who might have been Mary's mother.

Apparently, in an earlier census William is shown but then disappears sometime after the youngest daughter is born. The Canada story is family legend, so I guess there may always be another story to his disappearance. I have done a bit of research on Brits going out to Canada at that time. Many Chinese went and died of cold and blasting. William is I beleive supposed to have worked on the local railway, and it was the time of the general depression, so I guess its possible he may have gone , perhaps with a misspelt name.I guess we may never know what happened to him.Howver in 2 days I have discovered a family I never knew existed. My gmother Irene died before I knew her, so its just great to find out anything, Thanks

automatedgenealogy links that census record to a 1901 record in Winnipeg:

http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/uidlinks/Links.jsp?uid=150573561

(I forgot to mention the 1911 record was in Brandon, Manitoba.)

I think the link is false. The data for that William are:

born Ireland, immigrated 1899, stonemason.

But it looks like someone has contributed that link to the site. I'm not sure how one would go about finding that out. (I've contributed links, but never tried to track one back.)

I think we cross-posted, and you hadn't seen my first post.

I'm still looking into Cdn records to see what more might be found.

Janey-I nearly fell over backwards then, Ive just returned from the Caribbean after an Xmas meet up with my kids godparents, who emigrated to Canada a decade ago- guess where ? Brandon Manitoba!
If your relations went out to do the same thing on the railways where in Canada would they have gone, assuming the info isn;t correct?

http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php

No death more than 70 years ago (the privacy cutoff date) to match him.

Only one hypothetically possible (by age and middle name) marriage up to 1930:

GROOM'S LAST NAME: SHARPE
GROOM'S GIVEN NAMES: WILLIAM
BRIDE'S LAST NAME: REOCH
BRIDE'S GIVEN NAMES: ELLEN CUNNINGHAM NANTON
DATE OF MARRIAGE: 22/12/1923
PLACE OF MARRIAGE: WPG
REGISTRATION NUMBER: 1923,050097

Automatedgenealogy doesn't have the 1916 Western Canada census yet; Ancestry.ca does but I don't have a sub there. I don't find a good match for him, on a free search.

It could be that Brandon or even Manitoba wasn't his place of residence in 1911; it may have been a stopover on the railway where he happened to be on census night.

I don't see him in the CEF in WWI:

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php

or among WWI casualties:

http://www.veterans.gc.ca/remembers/sub.cfm?source=collections/virtualmem

Three people have surname Sharpe born in Manitoba in the 1920s here in their trees at GR. It wcould be worth inquiring. Two mention Minnedosa, and I did see a marrige of a female share there in 1883 at the vital stats site, so those births may belong to a different clan.
