I've just found the death of Edward who was christened the same time as Annie, so death of Anne's and Emily's olderr brother would explain why he is not on any of the cencus records.

Edward Vernon Chater
Birth 6 May 1867 in Poplar, Greater London, London,
Death Dec 1869 in Poplar, Greater London, London,

If you have the date of birth on her death cert, strangely, this is the date of birth for Ann - parents Edward and Emma Emily !!

There is something weird going on here !!

Hiya Dea, did you buy anything nice when shopping?
I just got boring food!

Anyway, from searches I have:

Births Dec 1868
CHATER Annie Sarah Poplar 1c 704

Births Dec 1870
CHATER Emma Emily Poplar 1c 659

and on the cencus records they do give approx 2 years difference between the girls.

Emma Chater is the birth certificate I tried to get but was told its not available....

Boring food for me too - BUT essential !!

I have my doubts about this !! - These two DO seem to add up to the ones on the 1881 census!!

BUT, Anne Sarah and Emma Emily seem to have the same father but a different mother.

I cannot find a death for the mother which would tie it together !!

I have a 'feeling' that you 'may' have the wrong Emma on 1881 ???

Can you give me ALL the info you have please ??

Try ordering the birth cert again but send to GRO this time - It is probably a lot cheaper than the other site you went to as well ??

there are wedding banns for Emma's and James Ernest Adams. Would these have Emma's mother name on it?

Ancestry is sooooooooo slow and not loading properly for me.

she's very elusive...
trickiest one yet I've come across!
I wonder if she died on giving birth to Emily then.

I've managed to find Edward's parents and siblings.
On the 1861 cencus Edward is living as a boarder with Emma Rogers.
Emma was originally Chater as well and married Thomas Rogers in 1854.

Here is the family in 1841 in Southam
Thomas Chater 40
Ann Chater 30
Thomas Chater 10
Jane Chater 8
Edward Chater 6
Emma Chater 4
George Chater 3
Jemima Chater 2 MO

I still can't find Edward in 1871 which as his youngest daughter Emily was born in 1870 should show Edward's wife though I am wondering if she died shortly after having Emily/

Also Edward married Louise Comber, (the named housekeeper in the 1881 cencus) in 1888. Could Louise in fact be the mother and that they were not married? 1891 cencus spells Chator as Chador

Comming back to my reply on 8 Jan.
Is there a possibility that the names have been swaped in the Parish register.
Could the mothers name be Anne and childs name be Emma Emily.

I have come across mistakes before.

Ruth Report 12 Jan 2011 12:37

I am sure that the mother is called Anne and the children are Emma Emily Chater and Annie Sarah Chater.

I don't know what Anne's surname was or where she was on nany of the cencus as she is not on the one for 1881 with the two sisters and I have not found any with the whole family on.

I have nothing for Emma Emily Chater or her sister Annie Sarah Chater until 1881

HIya, this is a very old thread of mine but I'm hoping that someone will still have a look for me and possibly help with Annie, Emilys mother.

I have now got the birth certificate for Emily and her mother was Annie Verdon which annoyingly was the second name that the first brother also called Edward who died young was called. So it was there all along!!!! Grrrrr

Annie Verdon was french and that's about all I have on her.
There is no birth date or death date for her so I am wondering if she was not from the UK.

I have also since found out that Emma's father Edward went on to marry for the third time although on his 2nd marriage to Louise, Emily's stepmother, it states Edward was a bachelor yet on his third marriage after Louise it states he was a widower so the question is did Edward ever marry Annie Verdon in the first place.

So mystery solved part 1 to open up another load of questions!
Where and who is Annie Verdon????
