John, bookmark this thread so you can come back to it for info. You can also get back by "My Thread Participation" under Tools on the left of this page.

Copy and paste it to a Word or Wordpad document that you can edit.

All the girls on here have given you some good info and clues.

Oh - one thing. You mentioned that Elizabeth mother hadn't wasted any time remarrying. One thing to bear in mind was that there was no benefits system in those days. It was often a case of marrying someone to provide for your family, or the poorhouse!

No, think this is the right 1881, following the earlier 1891 by Christine:

WHITFIELD, William Head Single M 30 1851 Coal Winner Newcastle Northumberland
WHITFIELD, Ann Sister Single F 35 1846 Formerly Farm Servant Medomsley Durham
WHITFIELD, George Nephew Single M 0 1881 Brampton Cumberland

Registration District: Haltwhistle Sub District: Haltwhistle

Civil Parish: Haltwhistle Municipal Borough:

Address: 8, Pit Cottages, Haltwhistle County: Northumberland

**Note Ann's brother's name is William. If he helped bring up George and "was like a father to him" then perhaps that's where the name on marriage certificate came from.

I have to go now but it's looking promising John.

I'm afraid I can't answer your question re Ancestry v Genes. I always use Ancestry and have never used Genes.

Ahhhhhhh that's interesting Maureen. So the George I found in 1891 with mother Ann could be John's George after all. If it is he was living in Northumberland but born in Cumberland. It gives mother as single I'm afraid. I suppose she could have been divorsed or widowed though?

i could not find them on 1901 or 1911 census and there was a daughter born in 1911 called muriel. can iask you if ancestry is better than genes.

I'm not saying it isn't the right marriage John. Just that in 1891 I can't find a likely George Whitfield that would be 20 in 1900, other than the one who appears to have married Elizabeth Blackburn.
I also have a sneaking suspicion that George wasn't born in Northumberland but I could be wrong of course.

johnww

johnww Report 9 Jan 2011 16:18

I have the marriage cert and my dads birth cert and it has elizabeth whitfield formerly ricketts in 1916 when my dad was born.john

Christine2

Christine2 Report 9 Jan 2011 16:12

Sorry John, it's got me stumped. The only George that seems to fit from the age went on to marry Elizabeth Blackburn.
I can't find your George and Elizabeth in 1911 either, to check where he says he was born.
