Find Ancestors

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am slowly but surely going nuts trying to find out about father and daughter.

The only information I have on James Moore is that he was a shoemaker and had a daughter called Jane.

Jane was born c1838, possibly, in Greenwich. I say possibly as in the 1881 census' she says she was born in Devon and in the 1901 census Plymouth, Devon ! She consistently calls herself Jane, even on her marriage certificates (she married twice) but on her eldest son's army enlistment papers in 1889, he names his mother as "Mary Ann Potesta".

Jane married Emanuelle Potesta in 1864 at St Alphege, Greenwich but before that I cannot find her in any census. I've looked for Jane Moore or Mary Ann Jane Moore etc but with no knowledge re her mother or any siblings am really struggling.

Thanks for any ideas / help.

The record you have found is their son who was named after his father.

On the wedding certificae they'd put Emanuell's names back to front. they wed on 22nd Jan 1864.

St Anne, Soho shows up regularly on Jane's records e.g. 1881 census she says she was born in Devon but is living at 12 Church Street, St Anne Soho. The death certificate of one of her children is 12 Church Street....

No, I didn't think to mention it as I had no questions regarding her marriage in 1864. The way I'd worded that paragraph I thought made it obvious that I must have, or at least seen, the wedding certificate. As it stands, I have copies of both her marriage certificates.

You are right, she went on to marry Benjamin Parrey in 1886.

The period I am struggling with is 1838 - 1861.

Yes, Sydney is her son and when he enlisted in the army in 1889 he named his mother as Mary Ann Jane Potesta !

Sydney's grandson is alive hence the latter years are not so much of a mystery.

Nearest births I can see for Sidney are both PoDesta.
If he enlisted in 1889, I would think the Kings N one would be too late.
Did your Sidney have a middle name ?
(which was also my reason for checking Jane's marriage entry - to see if she had an initial)

If he is the 1861 one then he was born before Jane married Emmanuel so maybe Mary Ann was Emmanuel's previous wife.

On the 1881 I think Sydney 7 is down as Stepson.
