How can I ever thank you all? I would love to now find the maiden name for Alice Frier, Robert's wife as this is now providing so much for me and my family to go on.

It might make you all smile but my husband is a Scot and I have always said I was more English than English, little did I know :)

Chris Ho :) Report 26 Jan 2011 16:50

You'll find the year of that marriage on the freebmd link, will give Alice's maiden name.

Always full of surprises this family history lark Catherine :-))
Good Luck with it all, it's very addictive!.

I would now clearly love to do my research and find out what took them on the long journey from Scotland to London where my great grandmother lived until she died in 1976. Fascinating what an afternoon can deliver :)

London Parish Records
Provided with London Metropolitan Archives
Our partnership with London Metropolitan Archives lets us provide you with a wealth of key records for tracing your capital ancestors. Most crucial of these are the London parish registers – records of births, marriages and deaths that allow you to move through the generations all the way back to the 1500s.

The latest addition to our London parish records lets you take your family tree back further than ever before. We've now finished the difficult job of transcribing our baptism, marriage and burial registers all the way back to 1538, so you can search for your ancestors' life events by name, date, place and many other details.

This crucial collection includes over 7 million records from parishes all over Greater London. People have been flocking to London for centuries, whether for work or just in search of a better life, so you're almost certain to find some of your ancestors among the names.

The records were created before parish registers were standardised, so the precise details in each entry vary hugely. Many of them include details of parents, letting you climb another rung in your family history ladder.

These records are among the oldest on our site – our work means that documents created almost 500 years ago have been preserved for future generations to read. We've done our best to transcribe them as accurately as possible, but you may find errors where the handwriting is almost illegible. In these cases, we'd really appreciate your help – you can add your own corrections when you view each record.

Our comprehensive parish records are only available to Premium and Worldwide members.

Do I have to order the certificate from the free BMD site before I can actually see the detailed information re mother's maiden name etc?

Looks as though it was Alice Bennett as she is the only Alice on that page in June so taking a gamble that this is right. She must have been very prgnant as Minnie was born 2 months later!

This is interesting Maureen as it adds another dimension to this afternoon. I was fascinated by the Scottish connection and need to spend some time trying to piece this altogether. Interesting that the name is spelt slightly differently.
Thank you, this is all so so useful :)

Ancestry has the family in 1861 as Deras. The handwriting is awful, but it does look like Frier.(or Friar).

I don't see Adam and Jess on the 1851 census but given that Adam is a widower living with his son in 1861, I had a quick look on Scotlandspeople but don't see a death for Jess ( tried variants of name as Jess or Jessie in Scotland is often a pet name for Janet).

There is this death on Freebmd so I wonder if the whole family moved to London?

Sorry Chris, Maureen and Rootgather I have been away working and not checked this for a while. More very interesting information, I have some work to do to add this onto my tree and continue to build the jigsaw! :)
I will have a look at the 'search trees' you mention Chris to see if any connection.
I can't thank you all enough for this, I was actually quite excited coming home tonight to see what else anyone may have uncovered.
