Yes, I have found Jane Keeling Birch before her marriage. I have her on the 1871, 1881, and the 1891 first living with her family and then as a domestic servant.

Can't find any sign of a death for her first husband, I saw her on the 1891 census in Tranmere under Jane Keeling and she was recorded as married.

I asked about Jane Birch living in Tranmere because I keep coming back to this Patrick J Cummings born in Birkenhead and living in Tranmere in 1891 in the same parish.

He was working as a Hostler which I think ties into your James later occupation. Maybe a red herring but could he have dropped the Patrick???

James was Janes' only husband. I don't know when she died but James married again in 1919 he died in 1956.

The 1891 census is very interesting, I don't know where the person who gave me his middle name as Matthew got it from, he contacted me a while age on RootsChat. He could be wrong.
As you say the occupation fits.

There's no birth for Jane Keeling Birch registered that I can find, was she shown by this name on any of the earlier census or just Jane Birch?

The 1891 census shows her as married and there was the possible marriage I posted earlier to John Edwin Keeling.

On the earlier census she was just Jane Birch.

The 1891 census of a possible marriage is very interesting. I have always wondered about the Keeling as far as I can tell it isn't a family name.

I think the 1915 death is Jane as they where living in Liverpool at that time.

The Patrick James Cummings does sound promising, it could be why I couldn't find him.
