Hi, can any one help me find a birth record for my maternal grandfather. I dont have much to go on i am afraid, and i dont know how much is factually correct because, i assume, he wanted his past to remain in the past.

His name was christian name was Charles, surname either Barber, Bartlett, Bartley or similar. He was born 24th Feb 1903/04 in Birmingham (Acocks Green Area).

He seemed to be well educated, had lovely handwriting. Served in the merchant navy at sometime, was a miner and may have spent time in prison.

I believe his father was called John and was a carpenter.

Many thanks in anticipation

Why do you think the name is wrong?

How do you know where he was born? Are you sure it's Birmingham?

My mum is sure that Barber is not birth surname he may have told her something when she was younger

He took my mum to Acocks Green when she was little and told her that was where he was born

You need the marriage certificate to see at least what he *said* for his age, father's name, etc.

My gr-grf and his sister married under a fake surname, 8 years apart. But they both named the same fake father, a Francis Monck. No such person ever existed. But it turned out that their real father was Francis Hill.

Similarly, although my gr-grf appears in two censuses under the fake surname, he reported his true place of birth.

So there can be little grains of truth even in lies, and it can be worth knowing what people said, even if they were lies.
