Hi I'm trying to find records for my dad's mother. I now know that her name was Ellen Joy Brown. My father was born in 1930 in Basingstoke and there is no named father. Unfortunately I have no idea of her DOB but I'm thinking maybe she was a young, unmarried mum! The only relatives of hers I knew were her sister Joan and brother John. There may possibly be a Kent connection. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. I'm struggling to go forward at the moment. Certainly her siblings remained in Basingstoke.

Do you have any idea as to when Ellen Joy Brown may have died? This could help to pinpoint when she was born. What name did she have when she died?

Lynne

Thanks Flick

I know absolutely nothing. My dad has never spoken about that side of the family. I only know this as I sent off for a copy of his birth certificate. He spent a lot of time with Joan (his aunt) who became Joan Hope.

I'm taking a guess on Joan's birth date as 1924 - 1986. (There were a couple of Joan Hopes in Basingstoke). Also I think John Brown was approx 1910. Still not much to go on - sorry.

Up to 1911 the middle names are listed and there is no Ellen Joy Brown.
After 1911 just the middle initial is shown so she could be any of the Ellen J Brown.
At least it narrows down the timescale.

Unless she was born with a different surname in which case there are these up to 1911..

Births Dec 1900
Allston Ellen Joy - Colchester 4a 738

Births Dec 1902
Arnold Ellen Joy - Northampton 3b 58

Births Sep 1907
Sammons Ellen Joy - W. Ham 4a 157

Births Jun 1909
Barry Ellen Joy - Tynemouth 10b 266

I keep looking at the birth certificate - maybe it isn't Joy. It doesn't look like the J in Peter John. ? Fay ? Kay. It is definitely ??y. Am now getting really fed up. Struggling to move forward.

My mum seems to remember the name Nellie and Heslop. ? why though. I never knew Ellen at all so I would say she died before I was born which was in 1968.

As you've probably guessed I'm a complete beginner at this family research. Do you think this could be a match Helen. What is the next step. Thanks for your help.

Helen

Helen Report 27 Feb 2011 14:47

You are all really fab and great detectives. I always knew John as Uncle John but maybe that wasn't his first name. He lived with Joan and George and possibly died late 1970s. I'm determined to find out more now. Joan and George never had children and I think they brought my dad up as he was very close to them.
